What you described for 1 day should be no more than 0.1GB. Somebody's already said it - turn your router off for 1 day to check the BT monitor is working. If that's ok, something (or somebody) else is using your connection.

As we are not using a wireless connection (we use a USB link for security reasons) is it possible that someone could hack into our line?

You can disable the wireless part in most routers if you have no need for wireless. How is the USB link connected to the router?
How do I add a signature?

Our BB usage almost halved when we curtailed daughter's YouTube viewing.

She used to watch a lot of music videos and also dance videos.

Try cutting out YouTube for a few days to see how that affects your figures.

It is a BT home hub, and the USB lead goes into one of the four yellow sockets which is marked "Ethernet". This is the suggested method.

    Andy if it's a BT router you should be able to log onto it and get usage figures;
paste http://192.168.1.254/ into a browser window, the time connected, data transmitted and data received since last boot/reset are on the front page.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

Ah, if the cable ends both look like

    ethernet_cable.jpg

and it plugs into a rectangular socket on the computer, then it's a (standard) ethernet connection (not USB)

Just as well I'm not on the OP's 10Gb cap....

    Connection time 1 day, 2:05:44
    Data transmitted 817.82 MB
    Data received 15.80 GB

OP, if the Ethernet-connected PC is the only one you use, and no other wireless devices are in use in your house, then go into the Advanced Config on the Hub and disable wireless, or change the wireless access key.

Are there any iPhones, iPod Touch, or iPads in use in the house? These will access internet through WiFi.

As previously asked, any games consoles or similar connecting via WiFi?

What's the price difference between BT's 10Gb package and their unlimited one?

    Can you afford the extra?

If so, upgrade yourself. After a couple of months, you won't pay any attention to your usage....

BT are offering unlimited from 10gb for £7.50
