"So i mention this to my parents, ' I don't know why your applying for that job, you won't get it, knowing our luck'

'I don't know why you want to live there, it's rough, you'll get attacked, knowing our luck'.

Everything is always 'knowing our luck', or 'it's not meant to be'."

The daft thing is, they may be trying to protect you - using the logic of expecting the worst so that you aren't disappointed.
MiL thinks this way - despite having had a generally pleasant life she is convinced bad luck was just waiting for her.

....... It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

The MOST important piece of advice on this entire forum.
Stop. Let it sink in. Look in the mirror. Smiiiiiile at yourself.
Then say to yourself - 'their loss, my gain'.
    Job done.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

I feel really sad for your family, they have had so many knocks they are protecting themselves, by hiding from hope. It's a way of protecting themselves, it's like staying far away from fire because you were burnt once, but freezing because of the lack of warmth. You are very brave.

Having seen the affect of negativity on my OH and others I, though it may seem an impossible task, can only advise making the choice of you and a positive future or others (family, friends etc) and a sad future.
There is nothing that says you must maintain close contact with your family.

Thanks gibson123, you're right, and i understand why they feel like that, but i don't want to be or think like this, i want to move on from the terrible things that have happened and hopefully find happiness, if i had to carry on thinking the way they think, i will never get anywhere, i just wish they could see this

I am going to try and ignore their comments, and once i am on my feet, i will be moving away, hopefully to a better life.

    Thank you
  • OP have you read The Secret? I know some people poo-poo this book and idea, and I admit I dont take it all on board but basically, it works on the theory of attraction - like attracts like. Positive attracts positive. Good attracts more good.
Im very lucky, and I tell people this, and I believe it, and I tell people that they can have some of my good luck and join in, and generally, if they like the sound of that [and if they dont poo-poo it] they get some luck. Sounds comepletely off the wall :D but, that works for me. I completely ignore negative peoples non-ideas. I only really take what I can utilize from what people say to me.
Positive mental attitude is all you need. PMA :)

I have two friends who both ended up stood, at some point in their lives with, basically nothing.
They have both gone on to have tremendously successful careers and now have no real worries. That is not to say they don't remember where they were but, one (a poster on here) certainly, fought against the odds to get out of their hole. Something which I in some ways envy for their strength.
