I've read about half of the replies and couldn't be bothered with the rest. So many people spitting their dummies out
If I remember correctly, Martin said he used to email his mates with a few money tips. Then he thought it'd be better to put them on a website so they're all in one place. It grew from there and he turned it into a business.
Users saved, Martin made. So we ALL ended up with more cash in our pockets. I'm not sure why we're (users) owed anything?
Martin is the same person he was yesterday, before we knew what was happening. Where were the compaints about his personal money then?
I'm not sure why people are leaving, the sale hasn't gone through yet. If there are changes, they're not going happen for a while. The deal won't be on one side of A4 paper - for all we know there could be loads of conditions about how the site is run.
As for emails, well they're not going to invade your computer and steal your privacy - just click the unsubscribe button if you don't like them.
Sold out? :rotfl: I imagine he was quite rich before making this decision, no need to sell outI bet it went something like this -
Lara - "I'm pregnant"
Martin - "Great!!!"
Lara - "And don't think you can carry on working those ridiculous hours once the baby's born"
Martin thinks "Maybe I could sell the business and free up lots of time....... "Bulletproof0 -
Can't blame the guy- I would have done exactly the same in his shoes and most people here who say they wouldnt are lying.
Whether it remains impartial is to be proved, but people who rely solely on one source of info are perhaps a little foolish anyway- if it doesnt maintain an element of useful advise the £87m spent will ultimately prove to be a waste by the new owners as people will stop using the site.0 -

will be the new slogan for this website. As opposed to
'Cutting your costs,fighting your corner'
The motivation for the website has primarily been to make money for its founder.
has taken risks along the way.....good on him i say....but if adverts appear i am out of here..:cool:It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.0 -
It is obvious that someone else will start a website on the same subject, but with 'independence' and many will migrate there, Moneysupermarket will then go 'shucks' we paid too much.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

If the ethos changes or the forums changed, particularly the old style board, then I will bow out.0

I guess of lot of users have made the website into what it is today, by diverting time to it. For example by psting a wide range of professional advice, consumer experiences and deals. Perhaps those above 10,000 posts or thanks should get a share?
Oh please go away with your ridiculous sense of entitlement. So you post messages on a forum and all of a sudden because you realise the forum owner is actually making money from said forum you suddenly expect to be paid for being there. No one is forced at gun point to post here be it once or one hundred thousand times. Why on earth should those on here with your arbitrary post / thanks count get a share? For starters you can't possibly put a value on the quality of those posts without trawling through the content of them to establish what is genuine advice / information against what is opinion and general chatter, and second a simple link post to a competition can gain you an awful lot of thanks clicks so again you can't quantify the value.
EDIT: If you really want to benefit try picking up some Money Supermarket shares, I'm sure they'll go up in value when the deal is finally in the bag.0 -
I'm quite surprised with the majority of negative comments here. In my opinion, quite frankly, the majority of the people making those comments would have done the same thing themselves had they been in that position. I've trusted Martin for all this long and I'm more than happy to trust his advice for the future. He could have easily walked off with the nice payout of £87m and said "time to move on, good bye and good luck!" but no, he secured the future of this place for long after he's gone and he's committed his future to the site and secured a stringent legally binding editorial code to ensure that things won't change.
For everyone who's said that it's the forums that makes this place what it is worth, well, no one has changed what you can say have they? And sure, the content fine, but it's Martin and his hard work (and at his cost) that gave us a place to share all the advice.
Well done Martin. Huge respect (and envy! :P) to you! Especially for the charity donation, that was a top decision on your part. May MSE keep growing from strength to strength!0 -
Just unsubscribed from the weekly email and deleted past posts!Maybe Martin Lewis will tell us how we can request that our forum name be permanently deleted?
Jeez. Boo Hoo. Some people. I just can't wade through this entire thread.
If you want to stop using the site or forum . Spare us the moral indignation.
Two words.
Just go.
And that MSE tattoo you got will have to be surgically removed as you realise he is a journalist who runs a sometimes useful site , not some deity.

I say fair play to Martin - he's a man that had a mission (a rather altruistic one in my opinion) and made a very successful business from it.
Did you guys think he was doing it for the love not the money over the last few years?! He's been making loads of money for quite a few years and quite rightly so.
There is nothing to stop most of us getting of our backsides and with a little luck doing what Martin has done - setting up and running a sucessful business.0 -
£86m for sending an email about the advice your users are giving on the forum or the deals they have found?
Easy money! I can't remember the last advice I read from good old Martin.0
