Just realised I've been a bit stupid about the dumplings. After searching I find they are increadably simple. But I'm sure I have made them a few years ago without suet. Maybe I'm imagining it.
Money, money, money, must be funny....in a rich mans world.

  • Just updated my sig, mainly bought fruit and mikk today, there were a few wee luxurys as well though as in-laws are popping in for a rare visit tommorrow.
Made the bakewell tart this yesterday, OMG it was georgous, I now need to make more!
I'm going to get fatter by the minute! Mrs Mc how do you make the crispy duck? Could it work with chicken too? Our nearest takeaway is a 20mile round trip, so if you add in the petrol it costs a fortune.

  • Hi everyone!!
We popped into Mr T this afternoon (about 3.15) to pick up some items from March's shopping list. Yes I am sad enough to have done it already, as back to school tomorrow and then I won't have time to think about anything else. The intention was to use up a Sainsbury's money off voucher which Tesco are more than happy to honour, so we were there to purchase non-perishables.
We nosed around in the reduced Bakery section and were pleased to pick up some Finest Choc cookies for 26p (OB gave up a bottle of coke).
When we rounded the corner to the cheese/milk aisle however, where the reduced refrigerated goods are put, we were met by a rugby scrum. I tried to have a look but the people at the front were taking the items out of the tesco worker's trolley before she even had the chance to touch them!! I shoved my hand through a gap towards something that looked like pies and she sympathetically put them into my palm. They were reduced from £4.49 to 63p! I also managed to pick up 2 pints of SS milk for 30p when the scrum had disbanded.
OB stood at a distance, looking on in horror. He was pleased with the pies however (bless him, he's happy to eat reduced value pies so I think he deserves them). Has anyone else experienced such hysteria before????
Were those people from the Feb 2008 GC??? I did wonder……

I'm just over half way through my budget, so that's about right I suppose (spent £56.90 out of budget of £110). Got to do quite a big shop tomorrow though so hope I haven't been over ambitious with the guessed budhet for the month. Finding this challenge really useful though, really making me aware of what I'm spending, it's definately stopping me from making impulse purchases.

Still no updates from me - 5th NSD and still got plenty in stock even if we need to live on pasta, chicken and mince dishes for the rest of the month. Fingers crossed, still looking good and still have loads of flour/sugar/lard/marg etc. Not doing that well on my inch loss though, on accounts of sampling too much baking. I guess I can cope with that, so long as I don't start gaining, instead!

PS: I agree with the OP who suggested that MrsMC could be listed as a career ambition... Except I'm now picturing a teenage school pupil during their interview with the careers advisor... it would be great to see the expression on their face! :D

    Hi purplevamp...

What kind of dishes do you like from the Chinese takeaway? only i have some great recipes, and they don't have to involve loads of time in the kitchen ;)
I know its not the same as getting one "ready to eat", but maybe OH would have a bash at 1 :D ....
I did crispy duck n pancakes the other week, and there was that much that 2/3 of the duck went into the freezer along with 10 pancakes... so next time hubby fancies it..its a 2 minute job :p ...
if there is only you n OH then you would be able to make one dish and freeze 2 portions for another time , like i do:j

Let me know if you want any recipes and i will dig you some out :D

    Thank Mrs Mcawber

My absolute fav is kung po chicken and chicken with cashews and yellow bean suace. We always have s&s chicken balls and deep fried crispy chilli beef and seaweed. I have an oriental cookbook but have never used it  . If you have an easy recipe that would be fantastic :j . There's five in our family but only 3 of us eat the chinese as the 2 little ones are in bed by then. There's normally some left over for my youngest sons lunch. We went to an all-you-can-eat chinese buffet yesterday for my oldest sons birthday and my little one (age 6) ate the most:eek: . My daugher (5) only had prawn crackers, mini donuts and chocolate fountain (not all together).

Mil been with her old unwanted bread machine - its a breville - r they ok? - 1st batch is in it now. Fingers crossed we end up with a loaf and not a doorstop!!:rotfl:

mhe - how did your loaf turn out? I've also got a Breville BM from my MIL, on long term loan and we've never had a bad batch. We usually have wholemeal loaves but also do white loaves, seeded brown dough for rolls and I've done white dough recipes for pizza bases, naan bread and hot cross buns.

I suppose the only thing is that the loaves often turn out a bit of a funny shape, but maybe you get that with all the different makes? or maybe I haven't got the ingredients quite right . Anyway it tastes nice! Really gone off shop bought loaves!

Been to Suffolk for the day to give my god daughter her birthday present and to spend the day with my best friend from school. Had a lovely day and brought 2 punits of strwberries for £1.50, got red onions, carrots, swede from the market for £2.00. really pleased so i plan to make a big batch of veg soup and beef stew ready for the frezzer. DS's on half term this week so only working Monday and off the rest of the week, so hoping to prepare lost of meals for the frezzer so when we go back to school and work the following week it will all be organised. I think that, that is the key to the savingof our pennies and time.
