Congrats on the job OP but 20 years to get a job? How does that work? I don't have a degree and I'm terrible at interviews but I've managed to be in full time employment for the past twelve years.

Lol it does seem a bit strange, I've had interviews where I barely had to talk and was still given a job.

Anyway congrats OP, hopefully it's a starting point of a better future.

What is wrong with a cleaning job? Ok I have a first class honours degree in manufacturing engineering but the manufacturing industry in this country died years ago.

You live in the West Midlands - did MG, Jaguar Land Rover etc completely pass you by?

I'm pleased for you finally finding a job, but please don't make excuses for why it has taken so long.

Suspect majority of comments tending towards being negative are by either:
    a) *NOT* the ones deciding who to employ (and therefore cannot appreciate why someone might always come bottom of the pile when it comes to being selected for a job).
    b) people who are lucky enough to have been in work, and so assume that others must be able to find it as easy as they did to get a job.
Wanted a job, now have one.
  • What is wrong with a cleaning job? What job do you do or let me guess...nothing because with your stinky attitude you're unemployable.

No in fact i graduated just a few yrs ago and earn considerably more than you, but that is not the point, it is the fact you talk about having a degree, voluntary experience etc then seem delighted at securing a small cleaning job, it suggests you either dont know how to look for proper jobs or you have very low expectations.

As pointed out recession is recent, 1995-2007 was absolutely booming especially those with degrees.

    I suspect OP is trolling.

If not, its still a joke.
The opposite of what you know...is also true

I can't believe some of the down right nasty replies on this thread, shame on you people. The guy gets a job and wants to share his joy with the forum while giving a bit of hope to others in his position. Then he gets attacked, unbelievable.

Congratulations Dave on your new job, I hope it will go well for you:T:beer::jYou're a lot better person than some of the idiots on this thread.

I have been on both sides of the table - and your biggest barrier in finding work is your attitude, not your disability.

when does showing disbelief equate to being nasty? Im all for the congratulations on getting a job regardless of position, salary or contract, but how could it possibly have taken 20 years? The mind bogles

Yes I think thats what baffles us all, how did it take so long, As I've mentioned before I live in a rural hole and I've had a good half dozen jobs if not more in the past 15 years or so.

    Confused.com!

I've had to go down the minimum wage route once or twice but I've been unemployed for a total of 13 days in my 10 years of working life. Not bad considering I've been made redundant twice!

My boyfriend moved over from Cyprus in Oct 2010 with no qualifications (just average GCSEs) and no real work experience (had been working for mum), so I was concerned about his chances. He delivered pizzas for a while and within 6 months was working full time at a call centre and is currently going through management training.
