It does seem odd that their current campaign boasts "All of our products are simple, transparent and come with no nasty surprises. Find out what we have to offer" - and includes a savings account that is only available in SOME branches.
Head of silly product launches at head office needs to be taught about modern banking. Maybe they should buy him or her a computer and show them the internet?Do Money Saving sites make you buy more bargains - and spend more money?0 -

Perhaps I should open a passbook account, pay in £20 by standing order every Tuesday, then withdraw it in cash from the branch every Wednesday. Then perhaps they'll consider me a proper customer."It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis0 -
I've got an appointment tomorrow with a branch in Scotland to open this account. It took a call to the branch (actually redirected to HO) to set this up with some umming and awing from them as to whether they could do it.
I was honest when I said where I'd seen it (here), and they said they weren't expecting MSE to post about it. I clarified and said MSE hadn't but ordinary customers who had posted on the forums.
It's poorly thought out IMHO. If they want to encourage people through the branch doors and to trigger finance reviews then offer a good product like this nationwide and publicise it properly.0 -
But why does that make you specially favoured? I've got £50K in fixed-term postal accounts, but nothing I can access online or in a branch.

I never said it did, I was saying in response to someone claiming that we don't all have passbook based accounts, and I was saying that some do, just as some have internet based accounts, or a combination of both.0 -

J_B.
And it's not just treating those who can get to a branch better than those who can't, it's only those who can get to a select few branches!
I've managed to get my dad an appointment in Richmond (North Yorkshire) to open the account. I got him to call and they told him they didn't offer the account so I had to call back and tell them they did as head office had told me they did! It's a bit of a pain as he will have to get 2 buses to get to it but I've told him he has his bus pass now so it'll be a day out
I wouldn't have minded an account for myself, I have a branch close by here in London but it seems I can't be one of these special local customers. At least I've managed to get it for my dad (well hopefully, has anyone actually got as far as opening it in the selected branches!).0 -
Yes, opened mine this morning!0

Have you tried ringing YBS enquiries and asked about having forms sent to a local branch?(post 35,36,37) - in the end this poster seemed to think it was not worth the trouble of the branch set up but if you think it is worth the trouble you could try?0 -
If you contact them via the website, you may be able to persuade them to send the application form by post and open via head office.
I have, hopefully! :jDo Money Saving sites make you buy more bargains - and spend more money?0 -

If I'd had more time I would have done this, I'm off on holiday tomorrow though and I doubt the account will still be around when I get back. My dad was the priority so at least I've got him sorted.0 -
I opened mine successfully this afternoon in Scotland. Transfer in by BACS/FP is possible so I'll top it up at the weekend.
Does anyone know if the account appears in internet banking and how long it takes to appear if it does? I'd rather do a test transfer in of £1 and see it hitting before I send across the rest of the money.0
