Yorkshire Building Society - Local Saver

Just noticed today that Yorkshire Building Society have launched a Local Saver account at 4% interest rate. Apparently, you can save from £10 up to £6000, and you can add to the saver any time you wish up to the £6000 limit, and the money/account matures on the 1st July 2013. So it seems it's rather like their Christmas saver in the sense that it can either be used as a regular saver or a fixed term bond.

The way these things USUALLY work is that by the end of Month 1 the maximum balance allowed is £500, Month 2 £1000 etc. so if one saves less than the maximum in earlier months one can make up the difference in later months. It is not possible to deposit the whole £6000 at the start.

I can find no information online about this account so I don't know if it works in a different way to the above. If it does I would be very interested. Where did you discover this account?

Hi, I'd be interested too if you have a link to this account as I couldn't see it on their website.

    Thanks

  • It's not on their website, I saw it in branch on those big posters they have in the window, I went away looked on their website and it wasn't there. So I went back and got a leaflet for it. The leaflet states that 'add to your savings whenever you wish during the term up to £6,000' To me, it's not clear either way whether you can put in the whole £6,000 or whether it does have to be drip-fed into the account.

It seems YBS has gone through a rebranding, with adverts appearing on billboards around my area, this new account and an added on tagline to their logo 'Built on trust' But it seems this rebranding hasn't extended to their website.
  • The name might suggest that it is a branch operated account and hence not on the website???

If I can "steal" some time from my employer tomorrow and navigate past a local agency, (these trackers are a nightmare) I'll pop in and check it out.
It seems just the job for my shortly maturing West Brom Regsave.

I agree that it does sound as if it is branch operated but details of branch / postal accounts usually appear on the website.
  • It is branch operated, no idea why it isn't on the website, it's heavily promoted in my local branch though.

Is your local branch one of the new ones that they've just opened? The account sounds like it might be a special promotion available only at a new branch.
  • No, it's an old one, I feel for the poor manager, his face is now on the billboards inviting people to come in 'to chat to him'!

Just called the Flitwick branch / agency - they have not heard of the account.

    May be very local!
