It may not really be an account in your name. That might just be the name set up in Santander online banking. No need for the name to match so long as the sort code and account number are there. The names aren't routinely checked, just might help to prove it wasn't really you later if the account isn't actually in your name. Not that it'd matter if it was just a bit faster and more obvious for the people doing the checking.stringer_bell wrote: »The money was drawn out via FP service to an account with my name according to my statement, so someone has opened up an account at another bank with my name, which is scary!0 -
Good.

Then there is really nothing you or the bank can do, sadly. If the money has been withdrawn, it is gone.
However fraud losses should be reimbursed unless you have been negligent in some way, and Santander would have to eat the loss. Personally I think allowing £80k to be moved online is insanity, and other banks apparently agree because they set limits on what can be transferred online. Oh well.urs sinserly,

I still don't understand how somebody could "draw out" money of a Santander (or any bank) account, without logging into it, and making e.g. a faster payment to the other bank account.
A single transfer of £80K would have led to an instant block on the transaction - - unless it has been pre-arranged with Santander, e.g. over the phone. Santander's fraud department would attempt to call the account holder on their registered number before they approve the transfer (they insist on calling me every time I want to make a payment over £10K, even though their daily FP limit is £100K).
Or did the alleged thieves use a Direct Debit? If so, Santander must have the Direct Debit authorisation on file?0 -

Read my post above about my phone, thats only way I can think of. They must of used my phone number, O2 said someone activated my sim in one of their stores, which rendered my sim card to say not available, so someone was using my number for a whole day ( April 26th, which is when the first transaction took place ) I didn't click at the time, but when I come to check my tax savings today it was all gone. There was several payments over a few days, first being on 26th, all the way to the 30th
question is, how did they know what my phone number is and my online banking details? I burn all my mail to a crisp in my garden, I can only think of some sort of browser hijack0 -
Clean your PC. It must have been infected.0

I had read what you posted before, and even with your update, it doesn't make much sense to me.
You can't just walk into an O2 store and ask to "activate" a SIM that belongs to someone else's contract. At a minimum, you would have to have ID on you to get this done, and know name, address and DOB of the contract holder. Also, it doesn't really make sense - - why would someone activate your active SIM? Are you sure that nobody had actually physically removed your SIM from your phone for a day or two?
I also can't imagine how £80K gets "drawn out" of a bank account, without logging into the account and making payments, having a direct debit, or asking a branch to make the transfer.
It seems you might be the victim of a major identity fraud, something that the police should be investigating. Have you reported it to them?0 -
I am confused by this as well, are we saying this transaction has been made online.
If I wanted to transfer £80K from my online banking account then it would need to log on to online banking first and then use my card/card reader to get an authorisation code to verify this large transaction.
I am also assuming you had the money in your account as I would not think it is possible to get £80K out of your account unless you had the clear funds available in the first place.
Keep up posted on what the bank says, I am intrigued.0 -

Trust me, I'm confused about the whole thing. I have no idea how this happened, but I do know for a fact theres no way they could of got my photo ID, no way. I've only ever had one and always have it with me.
I see that when my sim was de-activated, some calls were made that day, by them I'm presuming. One of them was to t-mobile websales 08454122412,orange websites 07973100150, 3 mobile 08433733333, 01635676061 i presume vodafone... any idea who to phone to check if a contract has been taken out in my name?0 -

A phone contract in your name and address would show on your credit records
Have you yet reported the entire matter to the Police? If not, why not?0
