Santander - 80k been stolen from account?

Via internet banking apparently, to a person with the same name as me, although I didn't make the transaction. Seems I've been robbed. Rang them and they will open investigation. This is crazy. any idea if I will get it back?

was taken out over few days, and on my internet banking the recipitient had same surname as me, hmmm. Also last month my sim didnt work and when I rang O2, they said someone had activated my sim, but that was only for one day. crazy

Unless they can prove it's your fault it'll be their liability, not yours. Some hassle for you along the way but shouldn't be anything too inconvenient.

Thanks a lot, yeah it's a bit of shock

I also obtained credit report and see if someone has tried to steal my identity. Quite scary really as I burn all my mail. Anyone know how this happened?

There was a very recent documentary on tv about how this had happened to people and banks refused to acknowledge the holes in their systems.

Whilst I do think some people can be less than careful with their info, I don't believe for one second the banking systems are as secure as they would like us all to believe.

I hope you get it all sorted out without too much hassle OP.

Hmm Santander - again. There has been a lot of press on this lately with some even suggesting that there is an insider

    http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/experts/article-2055021/TONY-HETHERINGTON-Fraud-suspected-Santander--pays-anyway.html

This happened to my wife - twice! The first time - someone topped up their Orange mobile (my wife is O2) and took £3400 on the following day. My wife has access ti internet banking but had never paid online for anything at that time.

On the second occasion, £4000 was taken from her account. Worryingly this came from a linked savings account from which she has NEVER EVER made a withdrawal!

She did get the money back - after ten days on the first occasion, immediately on the next morning on the second.

My daughter got a couple of K out of her account last year from several machines 200miles away from where we live. The onus is I believe on the banks to prove you may be careless with your security. In her case it was some low life scanning machine from pub across the road apparently well know for it in this town. She got her money back in compo, which she didnt ask but she did complain because they said they pay money then they said they wouldnt. I think she got £50

And to think I have just opened a Santander savings account and transferred all my money as their interest is very good. Wish I had stayed with West Bromich now :-(

Yes, I'd say that £80,000 going missing is a bit of a shock alright!

For some possible ways try http://www.banksafeonline.org.uk/ . Phishing is one of the most common ones, tricking you into supplying your own login details. There are plenty of other ways, including attacks that come via your own browser after you visit a hostile site. The security software that Santander wants you to install is designed to try to make that browser-based attack harder, among other things.
