I did a marathon salad-making-session this morning .... so I've food to go for 3-4 days. It took 1.25 hours as I've only one saucepan and I've not all my "perfect for the job things" around me.... but I've now got: chopped peppers, coronation pasta, potato/red onion salad, grated carrots and hard boiled eggies. All neatly packed in tupperware. I also have cheese and some little plum tomatoes (which took no cooking). Doesn't sound a lot for the time, but I could only make one thing at a time in the saucepan, and it takes time to bring water up to temperature and boil for: cubed spuds, then pasta, then eggs. Also, all washed up, wiped up, put away and wiped down.

Packed lunch ready to go - a tupperware box with the above + some buttered cheese topped baps + crisps.... it's a lovely day, but I can't decide where to go yet. Don't want to cycle 15+ miles again as it hurt yesterday :)

I could be happy living in a space that large, if there were a little bathroom and a little bedroom adjoining.

The word studio means many things.... from a large, loft-inspired, open-plan space with mezzanine level funky/modern studio in the heart of things/action .... to the sort I've lived in which is a small room with inadequate space/facilities and a communal hallway where every farquer slams the doors and you're 2-3 miles out of the town in Nowheresville. The SO Studio I bought wasn't too bad, being somewhere in the middle of those two descriptions, but the one I rented was annoying.

One of the best addresses in NYC as i understand it......so a cupboard really, :D. in all seriousness dh says, including the kitchen cupboard and the bathroom about the size of our sitting room, so not too tiny. Until two tired people and a baby's wardrobe, travel system and personal outlet of toysrus are all sharing it. They are using it free. They would have rented an apartment with more than one room, but it would have been in not just a less nice area, but a much less nice one.

Me too. :D. When i compare it to the size of some of the places we have lived. My favourite of our flats in milan was about a third of the size of the cheese room at most, bed and bath on mezzanine over tiny 'siting area' and kitchen. One windo for the whole lot, over the stairs, but compact, well planned, beautiful and a great location.

Finances depending, I can recommend containerised storage.... it's not unaffordable in a lot of instances. Mine's £52.50/month (12.5% discount for paying 6 months' in advance), plus VAT... and plus insurance. You could probably add it onto your existing house insurance, but I took out theirs as I have none and couldn't be 4rsed right then to research/find an alternative. My insurance is £3/£1000 of goods value.

I've got a container 7'x7'x7' - which is more than enough (it was their smallest). But that's the size of a good-sized small bedroom. Other places do smaller spaces.

I know it's a lot of money if you've got nowt - and it's a pain in the butt if there's no facility within 2-3 miles. You do need to have it close by so it's not too arduous to pop along and get something, or store something.

I have a mate in a 1-bed rent-controlled flat in Queens. His rent is now half what an incomer's rent would be. Also, he's allowed to sub-let if he wants; he says a lot of people do that - but his dad sub-let his apartment then had trouble with a non-paying tenant and booting them out.... so my friend was nervous of subletting his when he lost his job and his dole was about to run out (over there once it stops, it stops - you get absolutely NOTHING).

The secret to good small places is brilliant storage - the trouble is, nobody puts brilliant storage in. They put, say, a 1.5 wardrobe sized cupboard in and think that's good enough ... and a couple of kitchen cabinets.

With a studio room, say, 15'x10' (which is large), it'd be easy enough to devote 2' of that and one whole wall with sliding doors to d4mned good shelving.

Q for lir, that space looks amazing. Is the ceiling going in or are you leaving the roof vaulted internally? If the latter where are the lights going?

This will be my kitchen, the cheese room, showing fireplace (obviously thats just the brick work, beams and hearth to go in). Through the door to right of fireplace is the door to a utility area and downstairs loo, and beyond that the new study (where the light is shining around the corner). The study used to be the kitchen.

    OMG!
I'm so jealous! That looks fabulous and just in the sort of state we want to find for our next/last move.
We've seen something we'd both love but we can't afford it <sigh>
Can't decide whether to go and view it so I can find out why it's wrong so I can put it out of my mind, in case I love it and will just want it even more.
