Nice people thread part 6 - thrice by twice as nice :)

I've always ignored the ignore function out of ignorance about what it actually does.
I would really miss lir and hope it isn't any thing I have said that has made her feel uncomfortable.
I am of the view that as LIR says, this thread is like a cocktail party and it is easy to 'circulate' and not get stuck talking to the 'bore', I also think njiceness it is truest sense is being the perfect host and showing interest in allo the guests and accepting that what we might personally find rude may just be some one else being of a different culture or even just that some people like to exagerate their expereinces to be the centre of attention. WE can welcome them, learn new things and if we find them hard work just stick to mingling mostly with those we know have interesting views.
Sometimes I struggle with how strongly to express an opinion on this thread, it is nice to be able to politely disagree but sometimes I wonder if I am straying from being nice by doing so but then neither do I want a thread that is only about fluffy bunnies and sunny days out.I think....0 -

Ended up staying in myself last night, was quite tired and I'm saving. So at £3,040 right now...on track for the £10k by year end. Away to service my van myself today, bit less stressful than going to one of my own jobs. Also need to give it a good clean inside and out. What's everyone else upto today?
Living on £16k a year with a mortgage sounds hard...especially with a gf like mine!
It's perfect!
I've done about 200 miles so far, and it's getting a little dirty, so will be cleaned before I photograph it.
We've got 3 on the fleet as of this morning; I've opted for the white one, and we've got Russian twins (divisional managers) in the two black ones.
I couldn't be happier, and it looks great signwritten!

Toasters - problem here is that I cannot be trusted to cut bread, either thin or straight so toast is always a mixture of burnt and uncooked slices or bits torn off and jammed in the works.
We had dualit when they were new as they looked utilitarian and retro but it was no better than the M&S one we have now that mum bought us to 'replace' the 'ugly' Dualit.
Student funding - we let DD take the loan for fees and the deal was we paid it off when she graduated (if she had not graduated we said we would let her keep the debt). When she lived in halls we paid the rent and gave her £200 per month, however she also worked 10 hours a week and during holidays. her then bf was at Oxford and was not allowed to work in term time, although he did not work in holidays either. When she left halls and moved home she only had her earnings.
She is now on her masters and continues to live at home. She is paying her own fees and last year worked about 18 hours a week. She does not pay any living costs and meets all of her other expenses from her earnings and has worked almost FT over the summer. It is 'almost' fulltime as she has a half day to ride the horse she shares so some sport, some work, some study - that is fine by me.
Money on the thread - this is MSE so it is OK to include money. I get inspired by Micheals motivation to keep costs down, think it is Ok when spending decisions are shared for input or by inference, really admire Viva's prioritising and effort to participate in the Olympic moment, LIR's hunting down of weird and wonderful (and often hideously expensive) objects makes me smile. Pastures and Chewy (who for some reason I imagine is called Geoff in RL) both have the knack of taking the rise out of any bragging that creeps in - reminding us that its t'internet and even people who post on NP can be legends in their own minds.
I have a big IQ, lots in the bank, a myriad of opportunities, midas touch,a perfect life, a daughter who like me is very successful and adores me we are friends with many famous people, do good work and best of all I am a size 10.
Easy isn't it.
I prefer 'knowing' other stuff. grounded in the fabric of everyday life..problems with sweetcorn, A level results, children, cheesy mash, curmudgeonly types.
I even like that I mention helium balloons and get to learn more about helium than I could have ever wished for.0 -

I think a lot of full time workers would be very pleased to have £600 pcm after housing and bills as disposable income.0 -

Or .... toasting fork over the gas if you have gas, or maybe your oven's got a grill you've never actually used, or you can even dry fry it in a pan. Or .... buy sliced bread
Or, best answer, just shrug and say "so what .... if you think you can do better......" at anybody that comments.0 -
PasturesNew wrote: »I just did that calculation, I'd have to earn £22,000/year to have £600/month left after very basic 1-bed flat rent + very basic utilities and council tax.... but that's the full-time amount. I'd need to earn a LOT more to be in the same position for the part-time situation a student's in.
That is why being a student is "the best time of your life".
+living in halls is more like living in your own room in shared accommodation -shared with a lot of others, so reduced utilities
+ students are exempt from council tax.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Sunny/dry here, with a slight breeze... and big free air show. Saw the red arrows.... then walked round town as other planes flew about (not interested to be honest.... wasn't interested in the RAs either, but they were there so I looked for a bit).
Had myself a nice picnic, 1/3rd of the 10" pizza I'd treated myself to yesterday, half that ruddy salad I bought and a boiled egg. Just made a spud salad to go with the other half of that ruddy salad leaf thingy.... that should see the end of that!! So tea will be: pizza, ruddy salad, spud salad. But then there's spud salad to be used up.... so I have to think what to make next to go with that.0
