WE had an exam student who was running late yesterday so just parked across our drive even though our car was on it

The school refused to interrupt the exam to have it moved but at least we got him ticketed.
    I think....

How many men read Shades of Grey?

That's a strange one. Not really a lending book, but one passed between groups of female friends and notes compared over lunch. Considering its numbers 1,2 and 3 on the best sellers list, its impact on what people ask me for has been completely underwhelming. Perhaps they order it on the internet at night and in secret.

ETA: I think its also a book that's come out of Kindle land, so that may be its natural route. It'll be interesting to find out how book demographics move in the coming years. I also seem to remember tomterm saying that he'd written stuff like that and there was a good earning to be made. Maybe that's why we've not seen 'him' lately, too busy at book launches... (sorry tom)

I can understand why the school wouldn't interrupt the exam out of consideration for the other students. Hopefully that car will be abandoned across someone else's driveway next time though!

My experience of dealing with the police over the past few years has been nothing short of appalling. It started when I was assaulted and the policeman handling my case never returned my calls, never answered my questions to the point that I just gave up.

Since then I've been dealing with minor law-breaking (vandalism and that kind of stuff) and calling in to the non-emergency number. I've been told at least five times that the police will be in the area, they'll pop in and see me and they never did. Then I met the local sergeant, so I told him, and they still never did. Imagine if you were a little old lady being bullied by a local gang and that happened and the sense of isolation it would cause.

As things stand now, I have very little faith that the police are capable of solving crime. They certainly aren't structured in a way that's fit for purpose. This isn't even about cuts, it started before that. I don't have any sympathy for whatever happens anymore.

Words fail me, viva. I've never had to rely personally on the police but we need to know they'll step up for us if the need arises. It must be a horrible feeling that you need them but they're not there for you :(

Not sure I'll be too much help because I don't really get bored in the gym. I usually compete with myself remembering what I did last time I was on the machine and trying to beat the distance or number of calories burned, or setting myself some other target. I also do a lot of interval stuff which is basically 45 seconds of going a hard as possible then 45 seconds of recovery, it keeps you occupied as you're always flat out and nearly dying, or struggling to get recomposed before the next flat out bit starts.

Generally speaking though I stick to the arc trainer and bike, because the treadmill just injures me and there is something wrong with my right knee which is aggravated by the rowing machine. I can quite happily do 2 hours on a machine without getting bored - although I usually have to get off after about 90 mins when I start to get dehydrated. Usually in that time I'll do two or three different programmes just to mix it up a bit.

Don't normally do much else- a few leg weights now and then but that's it.

I did used to listen to audiobooks to pass the time in there but they're too expensive really.

I always make sure that they're aware OH is on the board for Professional Standards.

Normally does the trick. They're friendly, but when they take 8 weeks to reply to a broken window on a car, then wonder why it's been replaced before they got there is when I give up!

I did used to listen to audiobooks to pass the time in there but they're too expensive really.

I can't manage a journey to work without a radio, cassette (from the library) or mp3 player on, but haven't much spare dosh for that kind of stuff.
Radio 4 comedy and other podcasts (Selected Shorts, the Moth, David Mitchell, Ricky Gervais, etc.), downloaded books from librivox. I'm ashamed to say I never read Lord of the Rings or Don Quixote but got them as audiobooks. "Galileo's Daughter" by Dava Sobel was brilliant. "White Teeth" by Zadie Smith. Currently listening to "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" which I downloaded free after a tip on this thread where Brothbeard and Quoia keep track of downloadable freebies .

Speaking of books men can't read, never managed to get past the start of "Pride and Prejudice".

Major milestone today! DS came home from school on his own, by bus, for the first time.

I haven't read much classic fiction at all, let alone girly classic fiction, I don't get along with it at all. I associate it with ridiculous over analysis of every word in class at school, and how everything supposedly has a hidden meaning; it's all bollox if you ask me.

I want to read about zombies, nuclear holocaust, uncontrollably plagues and rubbish like that. Not some fancy metaphorical nonsense. Sophistication has never been my strong point.
