Um, i just relaised this make it look like i do not value silvercar's opinion, whoch is not the case at all, its just that other opinion was resoundingly that it would not suit me.

All my friends either liked it or wanted to give up after a few chapters but stuck with it because of recommendation and then enjoyed it.

May be a reflection of my friends. :o

None of the men have or want to read it, but they all seem amused that their wives like it.:p

Book 2 is better than book 1 and book 3.

Did the men feel they had benifitted in anyway from the book?

My experience of dealing with the police over the past few years has been nothing short of appalling. It started when I was assaulted and the policeman handling my case never returned my calls, never answered my questions to the point that I just gave up.

Since then I've been dealing with minor law-breaking (vandalism and that kind of stuff) and calling in to the non-emergency number. I've been told at least five times that the police will be in the area, they'll pop in and see me and they never did. Then I met the local sergeant, so I told him, and they still never did. Imagine if you were a little old lady being bullied by a local gang and that happened and the sense of isolation it would cause.

As things stand now, I have very little faith that the police are capable of solving crime. They certainly aren't structured in a way that's fit for purpose. This isn't even about cuts, it started before that. I don't have any sympathy for whatever happens anymore.

That's terrible. I am so sorry to hear that.

I do have to agree with those who've posted to say that not all police are as dreadful as the ones you've had the misfortune to interact with. I've only had anything to do with them twice in recent years. The first time was when DD went AWOL at the age of 5. They found her very quickly, although they were less than prompt to let me know she was safe, and because their satnav was out of date they couldn't bring her home until after a bit of a delay and a sheepish phone call to me! The second time was "the accident". The 3 pairs of officers who drove me up to Derbyshire and the FLO assigned to me were all lovely. I've no experience of trying to get them to deal with the kind of stuff that's happened to you, though.

I'm not sure what to do. My uncle was called into the MRI last night for a kidney transplant. He's in surgery right now. My aunt hasn't slept at all, we're sat in their car right now. I live two hours down, she lives an hour up and she doesn't drive.

Where do I put her? I think she's in shock, I want her to rest, or try to. I don't really know where I am and I din't know if there is relative accommodation or devent cheap hotel?

Hope you've sorted something by now. Thoughts and prayers for your uncle.

Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

DS last exam today and he is convinced that it went badly, very badly. Lots of blank spaces and he couldn't get into the zone. :(:( If he is right then it could well be that he doesn't make either his main offer or insurance. He absolutely refuses to go anywhere else and says he'd rather resit, but I don't want him wasting a year re-sitting.

It's going to be a long Summer. :(

I asked that, all I got was a cheesy grin.

Oh dear. Poor him. Its a tough summer even if you think they went well.

Just wondering, if he is really in doubt....do they do short summer crammer courses anywhere?

(If it was discussed) What did his friends think of the paper? Do his perceptions usually match the eventual grades?

Agree with lir that it would be a long summer anyway :( Hope he is pleasantly surprised by his results.

He thinks he knows that he didn't do well, a lot of blanks. This is the paper that Edexcel had to rewrite in a week because it got leaked, so I'm hoping it was a hard paper and the grade boundaries come down, but he says that there is no way he can get the A.

He is usually fairly accurate in his predictions.

If he did resit, the next exam session is not until January, so it means definitely delaying university by a year and reapplying. But the universities that he would choose generally ask for (even) higher grades on a reapplication, so I don't know what he would gain. He could resit and go up to today's offer, but it still may not be enough.

Not sure what else to say but hope that he gets the grades he needs. Assuming the worst, perhaps being faced with the reality of deferring for a year he would consider other unis, or could use the year to to gain some relevant work experience?
I remember what the wait was like and I don't envy either of you.

Sorry to hear that. DD has had worries about a paper as well. There's a bus strike tomorrow round here and I've been texting and emailing students to make sure they get to tomorrow's exam.

Good news! Plus it's my fave airport to fly from so a good start to a journey (although maybe not if you have to drive 100miles to get there!
oh i absolutely agree. i'm not sure how you fix this really though, as it's going to be pretty tricky to sack them all. i was thinking about maybe having some sort of arrangement whereby police can sign up for shorter "tours of duty" as it were, so you sign up initially for 10 years and then if you haven't made it to DC or sergeant or something you get moved on. however, if you want to set that up, then there would need to be something to help people get a job elsewhere when they finish - a bit like if you go into e.g. the RAF as groundstaff you learn a trade which could be applied in the civilian world as well as the military. not quite sure what that would be in the police, but if you just start dumping people forceably and their rendered unemployable elsewhere, it will mean that the standard of staff you're able to recruit will probably go down the pan, making things worse not better.
I know plenty of cops and current decisions and policies make it a less attractive job so god knows who'd step in and take the jobs if they were shed (and replaced by a short contract).

Mind you the government seems to be sacking most of the army anyway.
