If your phone does hspda you can get up to 7.2 given a good signal, something like the 80pa package I linked earlier on three might suit you LIR with a cheap (ebay) wifi tethering handset to do the mifi bit? Topcashback are doing £100 cashback on these contracts starting soon if anyone wants a referral.

    i don't know what this means:o

hspda is fast speed 3G mobile phone internet connection.

Most modern phones connect to the internet by the mobile network and then use their wifi(wireless) connection to allow any other computers (or tablet) to connect to the internet just as if they were connecting to the wireless router box plugged in to your phone line. If you got a cheap second hand phone to do this you could leave it plugged in to its charger somewhere in the house that has a good phone signal and use that as your internet access point rather than using your phone line. On a cheap package this could be cheaper than you pay for the phone line connection (for example the current deal from 3 costing £80 for the year).

I'm on BT. I haven't got round to thinking about whether or not I should upgrade to infinity. Somebody please advise me - I'm pretty much in the dark here. :o Oh, and while the knowledgeable nice people are about it, please could you tell me whether I should do the "tune up" thingy that the speedtest site is recommending? Thanks.

Do you see your kids wanting/ needing more on-line as time goes by?

Your connection [STRIKE]would[/STRIKE] may struggle if DD was watching youtube, DS was downloading a game and you were trying to keep up with a fast moving NPT.

If it's just yourself using it and you don't download much then your current plan should be ok.

I'm not sure of the price difference. If It's not much then you'd be as well to just get it. If it's a big jump then it's worth considering the above.

Off the top of my head I wouldn't bother with that "tune up". There is usually some catch or another to things advertised like that.

My recommendations for the best browsing experience is...

Google Chrome Browser This is the fastest main browser IMO and introduced a lot of the most recent browser enhancements. I know a few NP use Chrome and wonder if they find it better than the rest or not?

CCleaner This software cleans out your unwanted cookies and un-required registry entrys that clog up and slow down your internet browsing.

In options/ cookies, you can save cookies from the likes of MSE or sites you visit regularly so you don't have to log in after cleaning.

It makes a real noticeable difference to page loading speed and clears the browser bottle necks.

I use that at least every couple of days.

    Any other suggestions NP?

WHy is my download speed decent but my ping rate so so low?

Don't even know what ping does?

I'm connecting through the wireless if that makes a difference.

No expert but I'm sure ping speeds are important to on-line gamers.

If you are closer to your ISP's base then your ping should be better.

From how I understand it your download is like your top speed but your ping is like your acceleration, so lower ping enables you to react quicker in online games.

    Happy to be corrected :D

Try different anti-virus programs and only use the features you actually need, some are now so bloated that they really slow things down.

I don't know whether firefox has become bloated or it is an AV issue but my 6 year old laptop has suddenly become too slow to run firefox so I am now using chrome. I also run slim-browser an IE skin for my cashback purchases as it gives very good cookie control.

So I've got good download, which is nice as there are a lot of devices connected at any one time.

But I'm pinging slowly. Don't know where virgin cable is based, Watford I thought. Explains why I am not top of the leader board on bejeweled.

I want to join in posting my results but the hinges on my laptop have suddenly decided they no longer feel like holding the screen up so I'm on my phone and I can't work out how to cut and paste on my phone. The numbers didn't look very good but wondering if that's to do with using wifi and not being particularly close to the router?

On a side note, if you type i.e. my phone suggests k.d.lang?!
