I don't know if it is just one of those scare stories that appear in the press, but I read a story where a couple did that, and put the old sim in their suitcase but it was stolen from the hotel room without them realising, and again they had a huge bill. So if you take the sim out, you need to make sure it is somewhere safe.

Two obvious things to do with the home network contract SIM:
    1. Set a PIN on it in case it gets lost or stolen.
    2. Keep it in your normal wallet or purse while a local SIM is in the phone. It's not exactly going to take up a lot of space.

No phone will turn data back on if you have turned it off and for anyone going abroad with a smartphone, take out the sim and buy a local one that way there is no huge bills waiting for you when you get back home.

Hopefully Orange will knock some off that bill too for you.

Indeed they will. If you've never roamed abroad with a smartphone abroad before they will invoke their roaming credit policy. They find what bundle would have suited you best, credit you back the money you'd have saved by having that bundle, then they'll knock 50% off the remainder of the charges. You will still have to pay *something* - but it will be substantially cheaper.

There are strict criteria to this though to avoid abuse. There must be no notepads that demonstrate you were advised of the costs of using the phone abroad and you must not have roamed with a smartphone before or had similar roaming credits for a similar issue in the past. This list is not exhaustive.

    Hope that helps :)
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

    Long story short:
    I cancelled direct debit.
    Sent Orange a letter.
Phones got restricted over the weekend
    Phones re-connected this morning.
Orange have credited our account £1600 so we only have to pay £135 retrospectively for a data roaming bundle.
    Result:D

you shouldnt cancel your direct debit either way you got a good result but it could have ended up being passed to a debt collector

You do get passed to a debt collector as a result of cancelling a DD and failing to pay by other means.

I'm more disturbed that the OP apparently spent £330 on phone calls.

More money than sense I guess.

yes you do if you refuse to pay your bill electro-its not advisable to do that unless you have every intention of paying them otherwise
