Perhaps this time you are missing the debate? Does the OP buy a 'top' handset to resell later or stick with what he has until the IP5 is released?
What is up with the current handset that won't last another few months?
The debate is not about Android vs iOS right now ;)

No point in trying to go on about iphone Vs Android.

I know what op is asking and this is the point I am making.

If OP buy the iphone may be 3GS or iphone 4, the resell vlaue will be much higher then if OP went for high end Android. I dont know if Samsung S3 will hold the price or not, so far all Android phones have not been able to do that.

So I will ask you again, as you miss the point, we agree he should not never ever buy an android. Should the OP buy an iphone now with the intent to get the iphone 5 in say October or just do without buying a new phone with the hassle of selling it, when he can just save his money until such time there is an iphone 5 to purchase? :)

Well, if the OP is adamant on buying now and selling later, then indeed iPhone is possibly the best option. And this definitely will solve all problems with girls from now on, that any other phone may fail to do.

Very true, today at work the one lady's I found out has this week off work, it was her husband's birthday yesterday but he has had an iphone 4s since launch.
  • What a strange debate.. :(

Quite why TGM has moved it to another android vs iPhone question is beyond me, as even a cursory guess would affirm the consensus here, that the OP is best going for an iPhone for this, very specific purpose.

You don't really need to think about it, you just *know* that in order to hold the silly money they go for, an iPhone is the better commodity.

Android & other smartphones tend to adhere to the same rules as other computing, ie; the price goes down radically as technology moves on, in a sort of Moore-esqe relationship, whereas the iPhone is a different beast, and follows different rules more akin to fashion than technology.

A year down the line & the same hardware specs in a new product will cost less, whereas this year's Gucci handbag will cost just as much as last year's Gucci handbag - Despite the manufacturing, basic technology, materials and capabilities remaining about the same - Because Gucci know exactly how much cash they can extract from their fashion concious customers in order for them to remain "ahead" of the plebs.

In the OP's situation, if the objective is to keep a high resale value, then of course go for the Gucci bag rather than a Tesco's bag for life which is probably far more practical and useful, but ultimately not as cool.

That bit was never up for debate probably, but what the posters such as grumbs, dutr & co above were trying to say, is that someone won't go on ebay & pay £300 for last year's bag when for another £100 they can have this year's bag, still in the shrinkwrap.

Or at least your market of potential buyers will be lower than you expect so don't go betting big money on it - And that even if you did get a buyer when the time comes, it would probably still work out cheaper overall to keep your current flimsy Aldi carrier-bag until such time as the new one you're waiting for comes out.

    Very Nice post.
    Thank you.

Since I posted this, the Samsung Galaxy S3 was released and immediately SELLING on ebay at £450+

The S3 was available free, on £26 a month contract. total cost of ownership over two years = £624

If I were to have bought the S3 on contract and sold it for £450 on the day of release, I could have used that money to buy the iPhone5 (plus £50 of my own cash) and then continued on the cheaper contract of £26 a month.

iPhone total cost of ownership = £674

If I buy the iPhone 5 on contract on release day, £100 for the phone, +£35 a month...Total cost of ownership = £940

It's because of the contract price on iPhones is so high... Im basically 'stoozing' my phone contract.

    My advice

Get a CC with a long 0% on purchases
    Buy IP4S
Then sell it and buy IP5 when its out

But the iPhone 5 iisn't out and when it is your S3 won't be worth £450 as another 4 months will have passed so you're logic is flawed.

Just wait, it's 5 months at the most until the new iPhone.

Edit: O2 recycle are offering £250 for S3 at the minute, that will only go down between now and the release of the next iPhone.

That price is the maximum they offer for any phone it won't go down in the next few months. They gave me £230 for my s2 two weeks ago. You wouldn't recycle a phone so new it doesn't make any sense.

But that's exactly what that OP wants to do! Get his hands on an S3 now and recycle/sell it in 4/5 months when the iPhone 5 comes out.

He's using flawed logic for the simple reason that he can't guarantee what price he'll get for the phone.

Also, he'll have to contact the mobile operator and ask them to provide him with a micro sim if/when he buys the iPhone 5, at which time they may want him to go on an iPhone tariff?
