Thanks both to Paul and Grumber. I don't think I can run IE6 on slave drive, but have now copied over the favourites file. So easy when you know where the things are! Would like to copy over all old e-mails, can you help with this? Thanks again

Thanks both to Paul & grumbler. I don't think I can run IE6 on slave drive but have now copied over favourites file to current master drive. Easy when you know where to find them!

    susy:

I am learning with you on this one as I have to do a similar transfer (having bought new computer)

Which E-Mail program do you have on master drive? And which version of that program? (e.g. Outlook Express version 6).

Similarly, which E-Mail program do you have on slave drive? And which version?

If they are, for instance, both Outlook Express version 6, I expect you can just to a file copy like you did before for the favorites in IE6.

But if they are different programs or different versions of the same program it may not be so simple!

If I understand susy correctly, both drives have Windows XP on and should therefore have IE 6 installed on both.

You should be able to use the Import Messages function of Outlook Express to retrieve messages from your original drive.

To restore your mail folders, open OE and click
    File
    Import
    Messages
    OE6
    Message store directory
Now browse to the folder containing your old messages. You can use search to find your old messages first, search for *.dbx. I suggest you copy them to a new folder that will be easy to find once you start OE and select Import.

Don't copy the old messages across into your new installation, as it will cause failures later.

    Hope this helps.

Well done Ventura! The only thing is when you search for the DBX files you must change the search preferences to search for hidden files.

I guess it may be possible to import other Outlook data (ef Contacts) in a similar way.

Also found this link which seems to suggest the same thing, but includes pictures etc:

sorry to be so slow returning to you, I got sidetracked by the site - I am new and am amazed at the wealth of information available on this site. However, back to the problem in hand. I have followed your instructions as far as 'Message store directory' which I assume is identity 1. Having selected it and proceeded, I was 'told' that my messages were in the following location (location given). At this point I have the option to go next which I chose, however it then tells me that the specified message store could not be opened or may be in use by outlook express. I then have to click ok at which point it comes up with the message ' no messages can be found in this folder or another application is running that has the required files open' You mention searching for *.dbx, but I don't seem to have a search option once the import function is underway. Sorry to be dense, but am I missing something?

Make sure you are looking on the slave drive for the messages you wish to import and not the master drive!
