After reading about reusing plastic milk cartons for dry goods on this thread I might change my mind about keeping stuff in packets on the shelves. I expect they'd take up the same amount of room as the packets and they're much bigger. I'll also keep my eyes peeled for a funnel in the charity-shops if I can't find a cheapie in Wilkos

For the record I keep nearly all used glass jars with a crew-top lid and reuse them for various things like moscovado, sunflower seeds, things like that. I have a big cardboard box of them in the spare bedroom. And I'm anal about labelling them, too. I cut the labels off the packets and stick them on with sellotape. Looks much nicer than my scrawly handwriting and it's more legible, too.

What a useful thread this has turned to be! Thanks OP:beer:
How many of us are now rethinking our storage due to this post? I haven't had problems with creepies in flour but am now thinking that I'll try those ikea flip top storers and I like the idea of the large plastic milk bottles for storage. (Just cut the top off one to use as a free funnel) Going to use one for birdseed storage, not in the kitchen cupboard!
Someone also reminded me why I'm not keen on the big glass Ikea jars. OH dropped one and it smashed, chipping one of the floor tiles...
    Thanks everyone.

I like these, but they don't bounce on ceramic tiled floors :(

Just what I was going to say as well! :(

Mind you, the glass ones don't bounce either! :rotfl:

    I need your help.

I need airtight containers for my plain and bread flours. However, being an awkward s*d, I fancy one that I can put the actual 1.5kg bag into, not decant the contents into. Cheap, plastic. Clear or frosted, so I can see which flour is in it.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)

would something like this work? http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/80066723/#/90066708 - I have a frosted plastic version similar but not from ikea, which we use for dog food trying to remember where we got it from!

I was remembering what someone said about storage on the store cupboard thread I think and putting bags of flour and sugar to rest in a cut down milk container - could you fashion something out of two milk or water containers so that one was the base and one was the 'lid' by sliding it over the base one, using maybe something like draught excluder tape foam to make it more 'airtight'? looking at our 4 pint container it should just about fit a 1.5kg bag of flour

Its not airtight but i've seen people on here use a large (4pt) plastic milk bottle cut so that they can pop the flour bag in there and use the handle of the milk bottle to easily grab and pour it.

I thought that was a fab idea but, as I say, it isn't airtight.
