Getting BT Infinity installed on 21st, anything I should know?

Hey guys,

As the title says, I'm getting Infinity on the 21st. We're switching from talktalk where we get about 7mb/s down and 0.7 mb/s up, to BT where in theory we should be getting about 80mb/s down and 20mb/s up. (not gonna lie, I'm a little excited :D)

I don't think we're gonna be far off the speed, we're pretty close to the exchange (~500m).

Has anyone else here got Infinity recently? If you have, have you had any problems / How long has your speed taken to stabilize?

Also, what has your actual speed turned out to be compared to what you were estimated?

Thanks in advance,

David

The distance to the exchange is not the major factor, it's the distance to the cabinet (the green boxes) that matter.
I will try and get when I comes to my area (Delayed til June now).

Its just BT's 'brand' name for FTTC and FTTP there are many other providers.

Had around 8 months of problems some BT some my ISP. Be prepared for long downtimes the normal customer support is worthless.
I am migrating over sometime tomorrow FTTC to BT FTTC, just hoping i dont live to regret it.
I'll worry about the billing and getting away from them in 18 months, theres a sign somethings not right already. Think i'll make a call, if no joy i still can cancel minus the £7 for Hub 3 not needed.

Question, what do you expect you will be able to do with your 80mbps connection that you can't do with your 7mbps?
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Brag about it on here, presumably.

I think if you have < 4mb speeds currently it's worth upgrading to. If you have >10mb speeds then probably not. The FTTC checker reckons I can get 2.4x my current sync of 15mb. For a 100% increase in broadband subscription cost that doesn't seem worth it to me.

We got BT Infinity last month (Infinity 1, the slow one, as Infinity 2 isn't in our area yet).

We had a stable speed as soon as it was installed. No variation over the following 10 days that they sometimes mention as a settling down period, or subsequently.

It seems i have been lied to by BT when i called to cancel the order. In a stalemate situation 3 weeks ago, they gave me a UK call centre number not freely available which is then re routed to India.
How low they stoop just to get you onboard, the whole reason i went t cancel that day.

I can afford to be without connection for more than 6hrs, its needed for business and no phone either. At best 7 days without connection.

Also charging me a fee for paying even though direct debit was setup.

No problems. Just remember the new modem has to be connected to the Master socket and cannot be connected to any secondary sockets.

If you want the router or modem not next to the master socket they will simply tack ethernet cable to the place you want it but they go up and over doors etc as they cant lift flooring.

As out master socket was in a cupboard and would have required cable going all over the place I got a sparky to put a new plug into the cupboard too so all those electronics are now hidden away.

Other than that, no problems. 90% of the time get very close to the predicted speeds. Mid evenings it can slow down noticeably but I normally only setup downloads to work over night so not a real impact.

Personally what I can do with 80mb speed over 7mb is much more quickly download updated versions of databases etc which can be up to a gig in size that I need to do at least once a day when working from home.

Just went to cancel again, live 23.59hrs tomorrow night. Might be able to cancel but now in contract as its after mid day the day before!
    Subsequently charged 18 months £801.

Also given feedback on that customer service after, cut me off.
Knew it was a big mistake going to BT, should have stayed with current phone and separate FTTC provider.

Our cabinet is about 15-20 meters from our door, so I'm guessing we wont be getting many issues?

Livestream online games in HD quality without it dropping frames / cutting out every 2 minutes. Also, I was with talktalk for about 2 years, biggest pain in my life being with them. They even tried to scam us when we wanted to cancel.
