My sisters just had exactly the same problem. Her sons teacher wouldnt do it, the doctor said yes, but it would take 3 weeks!

In the end I asked a friend who has his own business, but I dont think he put his VAT number on the form, so I hope it doesnt get refused as we are going away next month.
Does anyone know if you 'have' to put VAT number down?

the person i know who had probs getting his passport countersigned rang passport office regarding a business owner countersigning. ips said this would be acceptable but vat registration number to be added.
maybe its not set in stone as a requirement if l33na hubbies passport was issued without the vat number

Thanks for that, I'm going to pop into the post office later with my sister and see what they say about the VAT number. We cant afford for it to be declined, we dont have time.
My sis did ring the IPS and they didnt say anything about VAT number on the phone, just that he had to be the 'director' or similar.

The business should be VAT registered or Ltd - it will be checked - and if it can;t be verified then the passport office will write out to the countersignatory,
Doctors are no longer on the list for signing as more often than not, when they are contacted they are either too busy to reply or they can't identify the person in the photo as they have so many patients.
Don't you have any friends who are nurses, civil servants, social workers, manager/ supervisor? - the list is quite extensive

Thanks for the replies, I can try my bank, I've never actually been in there though since I do my banking online etc all the time ^^
No vicars or anything would know me becuase I don't go to church.
I'll go to my local pub and see if any regulars would do it if they're eligible, I know the owner of one of the local takeaways but I haven't seen him around for months.
I'll try a few places today and might try my library but I think that the librarian I knew might not be working there anymore and I have a lot of fines to settle I think, it's been a year or so.
I've been trying to track down old teachers etc but can't remember their full names (~_~) well just have to go and try to get it signed today and hope it all gets accepted and there are no delays, I really need this break (^_-)

I had trouble when I had to renew my passport. I ended up asking my best friend's mum, who's a retired teacher. It went through fine, so maybe ask any older people you know what their profession was, as retired will qualify

Have you done a college/uni course? If so, you could ask your lecturer/tutor.

Since it is your first passport - it is going to take a a minimum of 1 month as you will need to attend an interview

Most of us who work in education won't now countersign passports as guidance from local authorities and it also requires us to fill in our own personal details and passport number.

For true friends yes, of course, I would do it but you get lots of friends of friends and parents asking.

We have just been to do the check and send, and the photo's wont be accepted. She was to far to one side.
I wouldnt mind accept she got them taken in the post office, and not in the machine as they said they sometimes get refused in the machine!
So now we need to get them counter signed again, and my friend who signed them is working, and wont be back untill tomorrow.
    This is a nightmare :(
