Where can I get a replacement remote key for a Ford Mondeo car?
Hi MoneySavers
I have recently misplaced my main car key which contains a remote central locking key fob. This is for a Ford Mondeo estate (TDCi 52 plate) and Ford are quoting my £160 to replace the key (yes that 160!). Apparently this includes the cost of the key (£65+vat) and a fee for resetting the immobiliser codes (£75+vat).
I find this amount to be crazy. Therefore I have looked around on the internet and I eventually found this page http://www.remotekey.co.uk/cars/ford. However when I called the number they told me that Ford have stopped releasing some sort of "unlocking" codes and they can no longer create these keys without haveing the original (which Ive lost). I do have a spare key - but its a manual key and it doesnt activate the immobiliser when I lock the car.
Does anyone know if
a) if I can get a new Ford remote key for a 52 plate Mondeo for substantially less than £160?
or failing that
b) if Ford are allowed to prevent these codes from being released?
Thanks

They aren't easy or cheap...but that's the idea....if they were easy and cheap car theft would rise somewhat!
If you've lost the whole thing I think you're going to have to swallow the charge.
Thank your lucky stars you haven't got an Alfa as - based on recent experience - you'll be looking at a few weeks off the road and a bill roughly the size of the GNP of Lithuania!“Official Company Representative

You can buy uncut keys on eBay like this one. Or buy a 2nd hand transponder unit and a blank key separately.
To set the code:
With the key in the ignition, turn the ignition on to the I position, then off and then again three times, then once more and leave it at I (a beep will sound showing that the system is set to program).
Now press the unlock button on the remote (press the unlock button on any other remotes that you have to program at the same time).
Now turn the ignition off (a beep will sound indicating that program mode is finished).
The remote is now programmed and you have saved yourself £££s
Worked on Mrs GG's 03 Focus.
I have a spare 3-button transponder that I must remember to list on eBay soon.

to program keys for the recent fords you tend to need at least 1 key for programming to the central locking and 2 keys for the immobiliser, do you not still have the (used to be red) 'master' key for the car, these wouldn't have the remote locking gadgetry just a plain key. If you have at least 2 working keys(i.e. they open the door to the car) then you can program yourself using the instructions in the car manual.0

Are you interested in selling it then? Cut out the middle man! I assume I can use that and re-program it for my own car?

I still have the master key - similar to this with the blue plastic thing in the top corner - http://www.remotekey.co.uk/images/ford-keys.jpgIf you have at least 2 working keys(i.e. they open the door to the car) then you can program yourself using the instructions in the car manual.
The car only came with 2 keys - the master key (above) and the remote key which was the same as this http://www.remotekey.co.uk/images/ford-key-1.jpg. The remote key is the one I have lost. Do you know if I can simply pickup a new or used remote key and re-program it as detailed above?
Thanks

I can't remember offhand as I don't have the car anymore (52 Reg Focus) but I'm sure that key is coded to the immobiliser, you'll have to read the car manual for the exact details. Similar to what Gorgeous George quotes above, there is a section in the manual detailing programming new keys. When I lost one of our keys i bought the new one from Ford for the £60 or so then told them to wait on programming whilst I sat in teh car park and tried myself. If it went wrong then I'd pay them. As it happens the instructions were fine, though as said earlier I'm positive I needed 2 pre-programmed keys to add another to the immobiliser as it's to prevent theft etc. (i.e. if you can add a new key to the immobiliser with only one key then anyone could 'borrow' key for a few minutes to programme it then come back and nick it overnight, requiring two keys for the immobiliser increases security, the central locking needn't be as secure as the immobiliser will be working)0

My Dad got a blank ford key for a Focus of ebay for around £16 plus got it cut locally for £5 (around £21 all in), you need to get a uncut key which has the same transponder type as your existing key (maybe a problem since you've misplaced it). As has been said you need at least 2 other keys inorder to reprogramme all the keys so the new key will works, from what I've read if you don't have at least 2 keys already then you may have no choice but to use the dealership - expensive £160 compare to £21 doing it yourself

Example for ebay listing which has all the key information in deciding whether it's the right key, ignore listing that mention used keys or done state the transponder id:-

PM me your address and I'll send it to you. If it fixes your problem, it's yours for a fiver. If not, post it back and nothing lost.

Hi Everyone
I have just bought a FORD Focus C-max from the auction (good money saving tip). Unfortunately, as it was a re-possession it has come with 1 non-remote key.
At £160 each for the remote keys from FORD I was looking to find a way of getting 2 remote keys cut and programmed cheaper. The car is a 54 plate 2005 reg.
Can anyone help me on this
Cheers

Having just had a couple of spare Ford Focus remote keys made up, I thought I'd share my experiences. Quoted prices vary widely so it makes sense to shop around.
My 2001 Ford Focus runaround only came with 1 working remote key. These Fords have the newer PATS II (Passive Anti-Theft System) immobiliser and require 2 working keys to be able to D.I.Y. programme a new 3rd key. Alas, I only had the 1 working key and so I had to get the services of a specialist. Cost would have to cover the cost of the remote key fob itself, the key-cutting and then the programming. The programming fee usually includes any number of new keys, as the labour is the same for 1 key as it is for 2.
The cost of the remote key fob is around £60 from a main dealer, but may be as little as £20 from Ebay (less if you take a chance with a used one). Make sure you get a genuine Ford key with a compatible Ford Parts No. Some sellers will also offer to supply and cut the key blade; they can do this if you supply the T code (Tibbe key code) or provide a clear digital photograph. They can do this because there are 6 facets cut onto the key and the depth of each cut is coded 1,2,3 or 4. The cost of supplying and cutting the blade from a local shoesmiths/keycutters will be around £7 to £10 each.
The programming cost is the most expensive part of the process and is obviously a nice little earner for Ford  . Here are some sample prices:
Dees Ford quoted £156 incl VAT to programme remote keys, but curiously only £40 + VAT to programme non-remote keys?
Dagenham Motors quoted £95 + VAT (£111.63 inclusive) for remote keys programming.
Auto Locks is a mobile auto locksmith operating in South London/Kent and quoted £140 including VAT for the same.
Best quote was £70 + VAT (£82.25 inclusive) from SLS Locksmiths, a mobile auto locksmith service based in Croydon.
Result? I bought 2 fobs from Ebay for £20 each and got Simon from SLS Locksmiths to come out to supply and cut new blades and programme the remotes. Total cost was £140 for 2 new keys, cut and programmed, as opposed to £200+ quoted from a Ford dealer. Still not exactly cheap, but it's still a few quid saved.0
