Just a quickie as an insurance underwriter - the problem with tree roots and foundations is not necessarily the roots themselves, but the fact that they drain moisture out of the ground which can in turn lead to subsidence. You may find this has an impact on the validity of your buildings insurances especially if they are so close to your property so get them out soon as possible.....0

Thanks for all your replies and support. They've been away for a few days, but I saw their car earlier so they must be back. Will speak to them this weekend.
My dad suggested bleach in the middle of the night! But I'd rather dig them up and speak to them. We're never going to be friends with them.
I do wonder if they don't realise that these trees grow so big. My FIL says that they are leylandii. They are a young couple and one of the two confiers is about 2 foot from their house, so still not very far. Though further than the 2 inches from mine.
Subsidence is a worry too. We are on old mining land. Our house is one of the furthest from any shafts, but some of the other houses on the estate have had problems. The house we were originally going to buy was 6 months late as they had problems with the foundations which was something to do with old mine shafts.0 -
DevilsAdvocate1 wrote: »Thanks to everyone who replied. We went and had a chat with them and they told us it would be removed by the beginning of June. It has now been removed BUT last night we noticed that they have planted 2 small conifer trees in its place. These are literally 2 inches from the side of our house, so I'm worried about he effect on our foundations.
Obviously, the trees look small now, but I'm aware they are fast growing. We have decided to catch them and tell them that the trees need to be removed as well as the bins. I'm going to get someone to extend the fence at the side of the house so this area is no longer accessible to them. They also seem to be using a larger area than they first suggested and seem to have made it theirs.
I think we will have problems with the neighbours. They reported us to planning after our extension was built. It wasn't a problem as the extension was built exactly as per the plans which we had permission for, but it was a pain having to wait in for the planning inspector to come.
I wish my last neighbour still lived there.
They PLANTED CONIFERS on your land! Oh my word! And they had the cheek to report you to planning! Nice people.:mad:I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.
Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.0 -
Those conifers would be lobbed over the fence and be adorning their driveway by now if it were me.
OP check your boundaries and get necessary fencing put up soonest.
Don't let them steal your land.0 -
It sounds like they might think it's communal land, my old neighbours (of the car on communal drive incident) thought our front garden was also communal and, in a nice way, suggested we club together to get it paved so we could both park there. I said (hopefully coming across equally nicely!) 'no, no, you don't have to do that, it's a great idea but since the front garden is mine then you shouldn't have to pay half'.Make £25 a day in April £0/£750 (March £584, February £602, January £883.66)

If they thought it was shared surely they wouldn't have asked to store their stinky bins outside the op's bay window?I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

It seems to be like they've taken the permission to store bins as permission to use the land as their own!0
