Depends on what you're driving, of course, but assuming your eyes were about 4 feet from the ground while sitting in your car, and atmospheric conditions were perfect, from the formula on that link, you would be able to see a 5-foot tall car about 5.7 miles away (using Google to convert from nautical miles to regular miles).
If you're talking in terms of pure light-gathering - look up at the sky on a clear night. You'll be able to see objects which are millions of miles away.
I was at 38000ft.
Yes i'm sure your calculations are reasonable, however that doesn't account for hills etc. The poster I was quoting was suggesting that human eyes couldn't see 2 miles in the distance. Which is utter rubbish.0 -

Inappropriate use of speed kills. 107 on a dry clear motorway is not inappropriate. But that's just my opinion (of course).
I see no problem doing 140 (on a track, off road, of course officer)......
I agree totally, BAD driving is the reason for most accidents, i see it every day in my job as a driver, thats the crime, the government have no initiatives in place to address this issue. Personally, i go no more than 10% over the limit in my car and lorry, it's not worth the points....BUT on my motorbike, thats another story!Sponsored by Tesco Clubcard Points !!0 -

Indeed. The general level of driving in the UK has got noticeably worse in the last few years now that the police only care about things that can be enforced by cameras.
Traffic policing in the UK is a joke.0 -

107mph in a 70mph limit is very dangerous - could he have stopped in the distance seen to be clear? I think not - speeders such as these should lose their licence forever.
A modern Porsche will easily stop from 107mph much quicker than an average family hatchback from 70mph so stopping distance here is irrelevant.0 -
If somebody can't spot a speed camera on a bridge.....
A driver who's looking for vans on bridges is a driver who's not watching the road ahead of them. Just another reason why speed cameras make the roads more dangerous.0 -

I do not understand these people getting off with offences because they have a job. So because I am unemployed I would have to take the 12 points and ban on the nose, but because you're a wan**r in a porsche with a job that earns you enough money to get the porsche and run it, you get off. Seems to be some inequality somewhere.0 -
Anyone convicted of doing over 100mph,in addition to a ban and a heavy fine, should also do unpaid work in a mortuary for six months.0
