  • yup I often freeze cheese as living alone to buy a small pack would be wasteful so I buy a big brick of it and divide it up into four portions and freeze three of them (recently M&S had welsh cheddar on offer at £4.00 for a huge piece 750gms) wrapped in cling film or foil never had a problem and always have spare cheese in store.sometimes my DD runs out as one of her lads could live on cheese toasties bless him so I whip a chunk out of the freezer in the morning and leave it out all day and its fine by the evening

Just found some cheese in the fridge, quite a bit of it aswell it was best before 09 11 it's not mouldy, can I grate it and freeze it or does it need to go out. Really hate waste

You said it yourself BEST BEFORE not USE BY.
When it comes to things over BBF use common sense, if it looks okay it probably is.

I recently had loads of pack of Lurpak either beyond or approaching BBF dates and still more to use within the next few weeks so I clarified the older stuff which means I had a butter I can use for cooking that then gets a longer life, enabling me to use the butter that was nearing its dates for sandwiches etc.
Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.

Unless its mouldy, sweaty or smells like feet, I eat it! BTW any bits you don't want you should crumble up and put out for the birds.

I'm usually quite good with best before dates, DH would have chucked it if he found it but now its safely in the freezer.

Great you were able to make good use of the butter.

    Good Evening Peeps

Wonder if you can help me out to settle my mind.

Shopping in Asda today and alot of their meat was reduced. We dont eat alot of meat due to the high prices but as it was more than half price I stocked up on a few extras. They go out of date either today or tomorrow.

I am planning on having a batch cooking day tomorrow, making casseroles and curry's for the next week or two. I do not have concern about the meat I am using for them, the meat I have left over - some stir fry chicken and a Chicken breast ready to roast in a tinfoil tray will be used at some point this week.

My Question is - if I leave this meat in the freezer and only defrost on the day I will be using it - do you think it will be ok? of course if it smells off or a funny colour then I will bin it but my hubby is putting doubts in my mind now and has already told me I am to blame if he is ill!!!!!!!

Please put my mind at rest! I normally go by the - if it looks and smells fine, its fine to eat!

i often buy reduced meat and freeze it straight away, I then defrost and use when needed without any problems.

If you want to roast it for an evening meal take it out of the freezer in the morning and it will be fully defrosted by the evening.

I dont tell anyone in my house it is reduced as they also say I am poisoning them etc whereas if they dont know they say how nice things are, I often pick the stickers off the packs before they go in the freezer
  • that will be fine!

I agree with my fellow posters...as a checkout girl said often the dates are only a guide and they have to follow the rules but in years gone by at home we had to use common sense. I have loads of reduced fish and meat in the freezer for the same reason.

The other night I got £8 of fish for £1.50 and there is no way I would consider in my present situation paying the usual price, I would do without.
