  • No I would cook it up and eat it ,its unlikely to have 'gone off ' in a few hours and as another poster says mince does have a 'meaty' smell when its out of the fridge.with the cost of meat it would have to be almost 'walking' off the plate before I binned it :):):)
  • I bought a joint of pork, dated 29th Nov) which I cut up into 3 pieces on Tues, 2 I froze and one piece I put in the fridge in a plastic bag.

The packet said there would be an odour when it was opened but I did not give that time to go before sticking it back in the fridge.

I've got one piece from the fridge this morning (so it's been there around 20 hours in the bag and today is the use by date) but it smells quite a bit still. I've stuck it in the slow cooker but I am still not sure whether we should be eating it. It looked OK.

    Thoughts...?
  • Can you describe what it smells like? all meat gives off a slight odor in my opinion as it starts to oxidise.

As long as it doesn't smell bitter our sour it should be ok.

Give it a quick rinse under the tap then smell again....of course it will have a slight bloody smell but it shouldn't smell foul. Trust your instincts, if you think it's bad bin it. But if it's pink/in date/ and only a slight bloody smell it's probably fine xx

Was the original piece vacuum packed?

Meat packed like this does have a distinct smell which usually goes within about 10 mins, it's usually gone by the time I've cut, wrapped and put the other 2 pieces into the freezer and prepped the reamining piece for cooking. I'd be wary if it hadn't gone by then.

It may just be that putting your piece straight into the fridge in a plastic bag hasn't given it long enough to deodorise. I don't usually divide mine up until I'm ready to cook the first portion though, so I couldn't say for sure that this is the case.

Well, I am back from Tesco with some chicken and scampi now, LOL. Yes, it is the Tesco one and I got a big bit delivered so I cut it up. Bit fatty but nothing that can't be cut out.

I am still not sure about it, looks like the dogs are getting a nice treat tonight unless my husband comes home and decides it is OK and we shove it in some wraps.

I am not very meaty at all so I was not sure if it is supposed to smell like this in the SC, I usually use gammon, beef or chicken in there, not pork which we usually put in the oven.

Thanks all for your help. I am such a wuss, LOL.
