NO NO NO NO - its from Keighley trade centre, the worst garage in the world for dodgy motors, it will be a dog.

I wasnt talking about the garage specifically, i was talking about the styling of that particular car, and what makes it a much 'sportier' look than the previous rhubarb and custard one.

I knew you couldn't resist the Alfa really.

I've owned three. I just dont consider them a sports car, thats all. I even looked at a 159 Ti new, but they were crazy money.

So it is a sportier car as well. And you were going to buy one! You can't be all bad then.

The OP wanted a "sporty" car, so I suggested an Alfa GTV, which is definitely sporty. Then I changed to an Octavia VRs which is very sporty and practical (even in diesel mode).
Any sporty car is going to cost a lot ot run, tax, insure and repair - any car - simples.
How long is the OP going to keep the car for?
You could spend £3K of the £5K budget and then use the rest for tax and petrol/repairs.
If you are looking for something "sporty", then this will not leave you wanting more

    Debt-free and Proud!
Or he bought a diesel alfa, realised his mistake and is now sat in his garage, with engine running and hosepipe through window.

If you'd even bothered to read the Original Post you'd know she was a lady.
A lady who now wishes she'd never asked a simple question on a forum where people profess to be helpful or experts or both, but are in fact neither!

(Used car traders scaring people off of the cheaper end of the market... more mark up on cars £5k+ eh?)

I wasnt considering buying it because i considered it a 'sporty' car - I liked the look of it and have a bit of a soft sport for Alfas (but as i discovered, not a £25K soft spot).

Speaking as a used car trader who deals in cars up to £5K, i'd say i know the market fairly well. If you'd read my original posts, you'd see i had a list of recommendations that has subsequently been backed up by other people who also know what they're talking about.

I'd say its incredibly unlikely the O/P will buy from me, given i operate out of northern ireland, therefore any opinions expressed here by me are guaranteed to not have the vested interests of my business at heart - i'd go so far as to say that my current problem is lack of good stock, rather than lack of customers willing to buy them.

As perhaps the O/P has found out, you cant kill yourself with DERV fumes - perhaps another reason why the O/P shouldnt chose a diesel alfa?
