    OP has been scared off.

More likely got bored and went to pistonheads.com where people dont recommend diesel saloon cars as 'sporty'

The OP wanted a "sporty" car, so I suggested an Alfa GTV, which is definitely sporty. Then I changed to an Octavia VRs which is very sporty and practical (even in diesel mode).
Any sporty car is going to cost a lot ot run, tax, insure and repair - any car - simples.
How long is the OP going to keep the car for?
You could spend £3K of the £5K budget and then use the rest for tax and petrol/repairs.
If you are looking for something "sporty", then this will not leave you wanting more

Theres relative merit in all your suggestions, sadly the o/p hasnt come back to give us more info on their actual requirements. :(

Is there another car availalble in the home so this requirement for 4 seats in the sporty option is occational.

An idea of the money availalbe to run the car might help narrow down the choices.

Thanks to everyone - I've had the best half hour break reading the posts :)

I had thought of keeping my trusty Picasso and looking for a two seater. I really wanted something that 'looked' the part - I'm not really bothered what's under the bonnet :) shallow I know! But after ten years of driving a Picasso I think I deserve it.

P isn't really worth much so wouldn't be trading it in. Now - dare I ask if anyone has some good suggestions for a 2 seater around the 5k mark????? Best value for money, reliability, sensible insurance and running costs?
  • Honda S2000, MX5, Porsche Boxster and Nissan 350z all available around that price.

MX5 definitely. A mk3 should be just about in budget.

Great cars - cheap to run, reliable, desirable.

Only draw back with this is it's only available in left hand drive. BUT it's got the same lump in it as mine has (Punto HGT) and if mine is anything to go by, you won't go wrong.

Remember Top Gear Christmas special 2010?

That makes life a lot easier,

Start with MX5 and then look if something else takes your fancy.

check the insurance quotes for a few, use a comparison site that holds your details then just change registrations to get the new quote.
Get reg of autotrader adverts for your samples.

Down side is two lots of on the drive costs, but you share the mileage out.

Yep definitely MX-5. No silly electric roof to break either, just a back to basics little sports car.
Incidentally my father has recently px'd his Mk3 MX-5 in for a 350z. I'm sure he'll get fed up of the running costs soon and be looking for another MX-5, though the performance from the 350z is breathtaking, completely different kettle of fish to the MX-5.

Pgilc1 illegal number plate on the second alfa picture. Very naughty :p
