Good idea to go to the pub, Katy. I hope it goes well for you :)

Are there any dog-friendly pubs nearby? We used to take GSD to a local one occasionally and she was a great conversation starter :)

Just let the organiser of the meetup group that you are attending that it is your first time and he/she may suggest a buddy up with someone else so you don't feel so alone/nervous.

Must admit that I havent been to my local meetup group for a while mainly due to lack of funds but I still keep in contact with some of the folks that I met there as we're now FB friends and we do catch up on the phone from time to time.

I shall be moving somewhere new soon and have decided to join the local church (not that I am religious) but as a way of meeting new people.

I do voluntary work too which helps. Must admit that I would never walk into a pub on my own unless I have pre-arranged to meet someone there - I was brought up never to venture into pubs on my own so that is something I have to try and overcome.

You can find out about local groups from your local library and in any free papers that you might receive through your door - I know that my mum gets a free magazine which I always snaffle because that has various free/lo-cost events that I can attend.

I think I am putting the pub trip off for a little longer. Although I am due to meet someone in a pub tomorrow evening for a drink and so may go along 20 minutes early as a bit of a baby step towards going on my own!

There is one dog friendly pub I know of in the village, its very 'blokie' though so I don't know if I would like to go there. I might try asking the landlady I know at the pub near by if she would mind if I took my dog in. She likes him so may say yes.

Thanks Horace, I will email the group leader now. Got a walk on saturday for my first meetup and am taking the dog so hopefully he will help me talk to people as he is a bit of a clown!

This evening I went to help out at the local Brownies group. I surprised myself as I wasn't nervous when I got there which is unusual for me saying it was a totally new situation!

I did struggle to begin with as I wasn't quite sure what to do, but as the evening went on I got more confident and helped make some miniature gardens. There were a couple of people my age there too helping out which was good. I am going to go back next week :)

Thanks red devil I will have a look for that.

Today is not such a great day. Totally lacking motivation and struggling to get moving. Very tempted to cancel my plans this evening as I just don't know I have the energy to make the effort.

I know the minute I curl up in a ball and give up though it will take so much more effort to get me back out there again.

Don't give up! You've been doing so well and you've actually inspired me to try and make more friends too.
Have I helped? Feel free to click the 'Thanks' button. I like to feel useful (and smug). ;)

Trying not to give up! I did cancel my plans tonight but have re-arranged for the weekend.

I stayed later at work instead to get caught up on work so didn't waste my time

Try Woman and Home website, look for their forums, they have supper clubs and walking/book clubs that you can join off the internet. Have been to a few in the Midlands and even arranged a few walks myself which turned out really good. Tend to be the 45-65 age group.

Thanks saterkey, I am not even 30 yet though :)

I will give it a look though, happy to try anything. I do have a friend in her 60's who is going through a similar thing to me so I will pass the info on to her too
  • Hi
How about a short course doing something you are interested in

I have looked in to short courses but am struggling to find anything cheap enough locally. Because I have qualifications I tend not to qualify for a lot of the cheaper ones and money is really really tight at the moment :(
