Good idea to go to the pub, Katy. I hope it goes well for you
Are there any dog-friendly pubs nearby? We used to take GSD to a local one occasionally and she was a great conversation starter0 -
Just let the organiser of the meetup group that you are attending that it is your first time and he/she may suggest a buddy up with someone else so you don't feel so alone/nervous.
Must admit that I havent been to my local meetup group for a while mainly due to lack of funds but I still keep in contact with some of the folks that I met there as we're now FB friends and we do catch up on the phone from time to time.
I shall be moving somewhere new soon and have decided to join the local church (not that I am religious) but as a way of meeting new people.
I do voluntary work too which helps. Must admit that I would never walk into a pub on my own unless I have pre-arranged to meet someone there - I was brought up never to venture into pubs on my own so that is something I have to try and overcome.
You can find out about local groups from your local library and in any free papers that you might receive through your door - I know that my mum gets a free magazine which I always snaffle because that has various free/lo-cost events that I can attend.0 -
I think I am putting the pub trip off for a little longer. Although I am due to meet someone in a pub tomorrow evening for a drink and so may go along 20 minutes early as a bit of a baby step towards going on my own!
There is one dog friendly pub I know of in the village, its very 'blokie' though so I don't know if I would like to go there. I might try asking the landlady I know at the pub near by if she would mind if I took my dog in. She likes him so may say yes.
Thanks Horace, I will email the group leader now. Got a walk on saturday for my first meetup and am taking the dog so hopefully he will help me talk to people as he is a bit of a clown!
This evening I went to help out at the local Brownies group. I surprised myself as I wasn't nervous when I got there which is unusual for me saying it was a totally new situation!
I did struggle to begin with as I wasn't quite sure what to do, but as the evening went on I got more confident and helped make some miniature gardens. There were a couple of people my age there too helping out which was good. I am going to go back next week0 -
Thanks red devil I will have a look for that.
Today is not such a great day. Totally lacking motivation and struggling to get moving. Very tempted to cancel my plans this evening as I just don't know I have the energy to make the effort.
I know the minute I curl up in a ball and give up though it will take so much more effort to get me back out there again.0 -
Don't give up! You've been doing so well and you've actually inspired me to try and make more friends too.Have I helped? Feel free to click the 'Thanks' button. I like to feel useful (and smug).0

Trying not to give up! I did cancel my plans tonight but have re-arranged for the weekend.
I stayed later at work instead to get caught up on work so didn't waste my time0 -
Try Woman and Home website, look for their forums, they have supper clubs and walking/book clubs that you can join off the internet. Have been to a few in the Midlands and even arranged a few walks myself which turned out really good. Tend to be the 45-65 age group.0

Thanks saterkey, I am not even 30 yet though
I will give it a look though, happy to try anything. I do have a friend in her 60's who is going through a similar thing to me so I will pass the info on to her too0 -
Hi
How about a short course doing something you are interested in0 -
I have looked in to short courses but am struggling to find anything cheap enough locally. Because I have qualifications I tend not to qualify for a lot of the cheaper ones and money is really really tight at the moment0
