Quitting Smoking - help and support

The problems I had with the other thread were more to do with:
1. Sue has only ever tried to help people and was getting a hard time over it. She freely admitted that she didn't know about e-cigs and couldn't offer advice. Fair enough - she has been running the thread for years and her advice has always been supportive and at least she has the decency to offer advice only within her knowledge base. I think it was unfair that the comments she received were so rude to say the least
No one was expecting Sue to offer advice outside of her experience, that was never the problem.
When one normal poster, no matter how respected and popular, takes it upon themselves to order other normal posters to remove themselves from any thread on MSE, just because of their beliefs, then that is the problem.
They can use ignore, they can say "well I don't agree with it, so please excuse me if I have nothing to do with what you are talking about".
If they believe it, they can say something like, I think you are trying too hard to convince people that yours is the only way.
Something btw, I disagree with totally, that anyone tried to do.
If someone was doing something illegal, like claiming smoking cannabis stopped their smoking, then you would have a case.
I also think that everyone has given as good as they got on the rude comments, I've been called several names, yet I can't remember calling anyone anything, unless they've said something horrible to me first and even then with a restraint I didn't feel like using sometimes.
We all need to grow up, realise the reality of giving up smoking today, has many different opportunities, some will work for some people, some won't, some will agree with some methods, some won't.
As you say, Sue has been running the thread for several years and I feel thinks that it is being taken from her, yet it is not her thread, it is the MSE stopping smoking thread, it is everyone's.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

Well done esme you didn't cave that's the main thing shows your strength and if it had have come to that I every faith that you would have got back on track. Someone told me once to look at the cigarettes you have managed to avoid ! I think that is good advice ;D0 -
Nice to meet you Katie, good luck with your quitting, whatever method you choose0

Stumbled across this thread and I find it rather distressing that many rational adults can not agree that one method cannot work for the whole of mankind.
If we all had the same opinion or lifestyle the world would be a very boring place.
I have used every smoking cessation method known to myself, my choice recently is my own and uninfluenced. It is so far successful. I do not wish to try and 'convert' others or offer advice on which method would suit you.
I would however like to participate in a forum which is diverse, helpful and supportive to anyone who wishes to stop smoking. To encourage the people who are having a bad day, to applaud the accomplishments and celebrate the diversity of human nature without all this negativity.Grocery Challenge Sept 2021 £95.40/£500

I feel a little sad this "mutual support" thread is causing so many issues for you guys and for us, there are a lot more important things in life.
So, I've put a suggestion to Sue that I think would work.
Much like Cinema Free Ticket Codes Only and Cinema Free Ticket Discussion on the Freebies board, let's have one thread for "giving up smoking tools" only and one for "support only" with no mention, directly or indirectly of any the tools, whatever they are. If you want to point someone to a particular tool, add it to the tools thread then paste the link in here, once only.
The links in Sue's first post would be used to start the Tools only thread.
You'd simply help and support each other by keeping your morale up, discussing how your day's been, adding your "xx days since giving up" milestones etc.
Thoughts?
It seems that people aren't actually reading what Andrea has suggested, a support thread for all. Now it really isn't difficult to put someone on ignore, use the link in a user's profile, and please stop all this childish nonsense and what can be seen as apparent bullying of Sue as it makes for very unpleasant reading.0 -

I agree Edinburghlass this should be a support thread for all.
Not just for all using certain methodsGrocery Challenge Sept 2021 £95.40/£500

You too Karmacookie! Good luck for all of us!0 -
Another sly dig at me. Yeah hands up. I admit when I'm wrong. I had 10 roll ups at a friend's house the other week. I also had 1/2 an oz after 2 months or so. Sue didn't berate me the first time and was very understanding. If you are aware of my situation you will be aware that I have a severe disability and had tried all the pharma methods of quitting/reducing, whatever you want to call it - to be told by medics to smoke again after a few hours. You will also be aware that before I quit I was a very heavy smoker (like an oz of tobacco a day) so even a small relapse like that is all it is - a blip.
It seems that now you can't have a go at 'e-cig users per se' you are directing corporately all your venom against me. Anything anyone doesn't like on the thread 'argh blame Erme'.....well everyone needs a scapegoat from time to time. Sure but I'd personally rather it wasn't me - no offence. Though I can appreciate what you are sayiing about my posting there as being unhelpful. A simple pm would have been all it would have taken. Am sorry I put my foot in it. (am good at that :eek).
Looks like I'm being cyber bullied again. That's a criminal offence. Maybe I should report the thread to the police? Any ideas?

This will be my last post on anything other than offering support about stopping smoking. Just to clarify a few points:
1. It was not a sly dig at anyone, simply a fact of something which I felt was wrong. I do not see where a 'dig' is apparent.
2. I resent what you say about having a 'go at e-cig users'. I have NEVER had a go at any users of e-cigs and therefore your comment is offensive
3. If you feel you are being bullied then by all means report it. I have never bullied anyone and do not intend to start now but you are perfectly within your right to take action. I will co-operate fully with the board moderators in this case.
Apologies to the others but I felt I had to respond. I will now only post on the topic of stopping smoking.0 -

when you say "people" do you mean everyone?? Lots of generalisations on this thread it seems. If you do mean everyone then can you let me know specifically what part of andreas post I didnt read?
Anyway having got that off my chest nice to meet you Edinburghlass not seen you on the quitting smoking thread before. How long have you been stopped for? Good luck anyway its a tough thing to do and I hope you are successful :T
I am 10 weeks down the line now thanks to radio 4 and this thread (well the original one anyway)
Still occasionally want one but that has pretty much gone now and it takes me by suprise when the thought crosses my mind.
Hope we can sort all of this out and just go back to a nice thread where the intent is what matters not the process:)
