Superscaper would you build an aircraft if there were no airports to fly from????This is what Microsoft have done. The modem manufacturers have not helped by being late with their software but Microsoft should at least have admitted there would be a hiatus whilst they all caught up or were they slow releasing the code to them?Either way it doesn't help me and I feel ripped off.

As Wolfman says, Microsoft have made the code available for years now and your analogy would be if you couldn't fly from a few airports (which is what happens in real life, there are hundreds of airports the 777 can't land or take off from, but does that mean Boeing should never have developed it?). As has happened with XP and 98 and every OS there will be some products that NEVER get updated drivers, it's in no way MS's responsibility.

    I think it works like.

    Microsoft announce o/s.

If a hardware supplier wants a driver included in the o/s, they supply it, and pay Microsoft to test it. If it passes tests, it's included.

5 years later, the o/s is released.

HP and Thomson didn't bother.. Not Microsoft's problem, they don't make the hardware..

Your driver may never come, I have loads of stuff bought pre-XP, without any drivers.

    very well put.
In the end its down to the individual consumer to research their needs and compatibility issues.
if you use a certain ISP, you needed to ask them first if they have support for Vista yet as its only a month old O/S as far as the general public are concerned.

Since its been available we've built ONE fault free PC with it on.
We've repaired around a dozen branded PCs, especially chap entry level Packard Bell machines which are only JUST good enough to run Vista.
I personally set up a brand new Demo PC at our shop with Vista Business edition and it was the easiest install I ever did.
But we made sure all the components were compatible first and mor than the minimum spec for Vista.
Personally I think its a bad idea on entry level laptops.
as the graphics cannot be upgraded to display the Aero graphic part of Vista.
Maybe there should be a VISTA-LITE for laptops!

Anyways, microsoft make operating systems, its up to other vendors to sort their drivers/software out in advance or not bother.
its up to the consumer to check if the hardware/software/ISP they use or want to use, is Vista compatible and if not, when will they be.

The computer is going to be collected in a few days time.As I said earlier I feel ripped off by this product. It has taken up a lot of my time and telephone bill to try an produce a resolution but it is not going to happen.I will give Vista a negative recommendation on every website I subscribe to,which includes some very large gaming communities.

I can understand why you're angry, but you're reacting in totally the wrong way, and have shown no effort to find a solution. Virtually all of your posts are just angry rants, nothing factual.

"I told the salesman in PC world about my troubles when I bought a router this morning and his comment was that he would not touch vista"

Also surely if you've bought a router your problems should be solved....?

Going on that kind of mindset. There aren't any drivers for a TV card I have in Linux. Could you give Linux a few negative reviews too?

I still don't see how the fault is with Vista. If you're going to slag off a company I would suggest you slag off your ISP and whoever made your printer.

If you're a gamer what will you do when DX10 games start to come onto the market?

I am sure that there are a whole army of people who are as equally as disappointed with vista as I am.I have spent hours on the net and the phone trying to find a resolution. This problem though is something that MS should have addressed before the launch or does Bill G want us all to buy a router? As a gamer I will not install anything that will disable the games.

Why should microsoft address somebody else's problem? Unless you want to increase the cost of Vista 1000% to allow for microsoft to write the drivers themselves for every conceivable piece of hardware. If you don't like vista or the way it runs then that would be your opinion and I wouldn't dispute that. But really you do seem to be irrationally targeting microsoft for problems caused by other manufacturers and that's why I have to disagree with you. Microsoft have done everything in their power to let manufacturers develop their software to be compatible by letting them have the builds years ago and working with them if there are problems. Again how is it Microsoft's responsibility that other companies can't be bothered? I mean how is it any worse than XP which isn't 100% compatible with all hardware. Can you name a single OS that is? I'd sure like to know.

I am glad that so many of you are happy with Bill G's latest offering.I am not and I will not return to it until it has matured via a couple of service packs. I was expecting an xp plus product i.e.it would do everything xp is capable of and communicate with plus an extra tier of improvement.I have assumed and I am sure that everybody is aware of the danger of doing that.So its back to xp pro for me for the forseeable future.I have returned my computer as downgrading it to xp meant that some of my specified components such as tv tuners were not available ,which was unacceptable.Thank you for all your help
