Hi, pretty new here but getting v excited about Christmas & all the preparations :j.

Just though I'd post in case there are any MSE peeps in & around the North East. The Weardale railway are having the Polar Express train over the Christmas period. It looks absolutely gorgeous & it's the first time it's been in the UK. If anyone is booking it, don't try in an iPad because it fibs & tells you there's no availability. I can't wait :j

    I'm new so can't post link but it's -

    W w w. Weardale railway. Com / polar _ express

Don't know if someone can link this properly & hope it's ok to post!

Hope this helps someone! It's the type of thing I'm usually oblivious to until after the event or until its sold out.
    looks fab!

The Polar Express is approximately a one-hour round-trip, with evening departures from November 16 through December 30 from the Weardale Railway train station in Stanhope, County Durham.

You meet santa too like the kids in the film

Kids are encouraged to wear their pyjamas, and Santa gives them a bell that you can only hear if you believe. wish I lived nearer!
    1,2 & 5p: Christmas day food £9.31
    10 & 20p: misc savings £2.70
    50p: Christmas presents £3.50
    £2: holidays £2.00
  • Thanks of re posting Marilyn. I can't wait. Have had the Polar Express dvd for a few years but we haven't watched it yet so will watch that before our visit :-)

Thank you for those - yes that is what I am struggling with, the 'finished' ones come out cheaper!

Perhaps I should get a pre painted one and be done with it! Could always try and sand and paint myself at a later date!!

You know what, your words have been playing on my mind all morning. I'm feeling really humbled and pretty darn stupid that I was even considering those ridiculous calendars.

So guess what, I have donated £50 of my facebay money to charity (ms society as its close to home) and I will buy them a cheap chocolate one each and teach them to be grateful for what they have. All thanks to you.

I was trying to keep up with the Jones' and that's not me.

So truly, thank you, for making me see sense and helping a charity in the process.

    Love this site!

WOW! That's really amazing! Good on you!!
Will you tell them do you think, that you also donated money to charity on their behalf or keep it to yourself?

It is really hard sometimes to not try and keep up with everyone else I think. Sometimes I do get a bit upset (like a few weeks ago when everyone pulled me back up) I assume it is only human nature, I wouldn't beat yourself up over it.

My3girls, what a lovely thing to do. I agree, it's inspiring and does make you count your blessings. DH is out of work so we are struggling but we're doing OK - some of the stories on the Old Style boards show people really at the end of their tether, and unfortunately the cuts coming in are sure to push more people into that category.
that doesn't mean we can't enjoy christmas - what better to cheer us all up after all - but it's definitely going to be quite a frugal christmas here. Wonder what comes up on pinterest if I search frugal christmas? Might go look!

I found some pine cones that had ribbon attached to the top and a bunch of those hung on the front door instead of buying a wreath - which would be good if you usually buy a wreath each year. Or a nice craft to do with children and hang them indoors.

I am also newly addicted to Pinterest so am going to also have a look :)

Re: Polar express - sounds amazing!

oh and them trays made out of sweets look brilliant! Do they sell those sweets in this country? I like the candy canes might be nice to do for our niece and nephew.
Everything is always better after a cup of tea
  • Hey, it was the amazing mr blunden x

Thanks :D. I may have a look for it, it would be nice to watch it again and see if I still like it.
what a lovely kind person! *sends you a hug for being so lovely* :D
Agreed :) I was going to post this myself. It gives you faith that people aren't all bad. When mostly these days, sadly it seems like they are.

I really need to also find some gold tissue paper to wrap up two gift cards but I havnt seen any as of yet. I have decided to layer my jar of gold with sweets & the gift cards be hidden between layers.
My local Tesco had rolls of gold paper in the crafts section for 99p if that's any help?

This is a lovely thing to do. :)

Reading all the other lovely things people do for others at christmas has left me in awe, I genuinely didn't think there were so many kind people left in the world, People these days always seem to be 'me me me'. It's truly eye opening and nice to realise that not everyone is like that.
Also loving the snowman pizza, it would be easy peasy to make as well. I might get the elf to leave a recipe for DS somewhere and we can make it one night in December.

That link for the polar express train has left me well and truly jelous!! :(:rotfl:
I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to take DS to see it, but it's too far away.
Bah humbug :( (I actually can't believe I've just said that... I take it back!! haha :D)
    Having a coke with you
is even more fun than going to San Sebastian, Irun, Hendaye, Biarritz, Bayonne
or being sick to my stomach on the Travesera de Gracia in Barcelona
  • Question for those who have done the shoebox appeal in the past.. i've got a number of little pressies suitable for boys (we're not longer having any contact with my stepsons so they are presents originally bought for them) so we are going to do the shoebox appeal... anyway.. are halo toys classed as war toys? and what about childrens story books? i know it says no novels but i think the ones we have are silly fact ones or comic type ones?

  • Hello All,

Done a bit of maths today and worked out that I've spent 26.28% of my Christmas budget and that was only on the kids (3 of them, 19 adults to go).

Will have to behave myself and not get carried away.

Saw the Christmas section in my local 'Next clearance' and they also had Christmas items from last year on sale.

Do they have any relation to war i.e. guns, hand grenade, knives etc? I'm not to familiar with Halo and had a google and there's a lot of toys! If you have a link I'll be able to say a bit more. Books are generally excluded as the child may not be able to read english! However there is a disclaimer on the site (if its operation christmas child you're doing) that say that if something is innapropriate then they will take it out and use it in some other way - not sure what maybe they sell them? x

Thanks damzel & possesion currently only need about a quarter of a square LOL however I thought I could maybe wrap the jar up in tissue paper too to make it took even more ott :p
