DSD hit by a car!

DSD ended up in hospital today after being hit by a car that a 'batty old woman' was reversing out of her drive. But she refuses point blank to report it or to give her father the details.

Her view is that her injuries aren't that serious therefore the fact that this woman was reversing into a major road and hit a pedestrian is of no consequence. (This could affect her being able to take up a job for which she literally passed the qualification yesterday and put the application in today. The training for this was £200!)

What happens next time this batty old woman reverses and it's a child in a pushchair that she has even less likelihood of seeing?

Is it just me?

(She's 17 next birthday and wants driving lessons - if that's her attitude to dangerous driving then no way!)

    Hi OP,

Are you absolutely certain that this is what happened? It sounds a bit as if your DSD might be using this as a cover story - maybe a friend of hers was driving badly and they have agreed that nobody's spilling the beans...

I'm not trying to be horrible by suggesting that your DSD isn't telling the whole truth - it's just knowing kids and teenagers, this doesn't ring true somehow. Hope you get to the bottom of it anyway.

    Best wishes

She's probably still in shock. Maybe tomorrow you can talk to her again about what could have happened and what will possibly happen again if she doesn't report it.

My mum was reversed into at a petrol station by an old man a few years ago. She was knocked over but not badly hurt and refused to report it too.

What could have happened is irrelevant, it didnt happen.

If this lady reversed out of a drive and hit some one, any one then it is a police matter and should be reported as such.

The police will soon get her insurance details out of her.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

No, I wasn't there so I don't know exactly what happened. My take is that she is hiding something - she refused point blank to explain why she felt it wasn't appropriate to report it, other than that she wasn't badly injured, and stated that there was no way she would sue for compensation even if she was injured. I pointed out that putting a financial burden on her family rather than on the car driver wasn't fair and that in situations like this is isn't "all about her" but about the danger posed by an at least careless (possibly senile) driver and got a very surly response.

I figure it's either that she did something really stupid and thought this was a good explanation or that it was her mate's granny.

What could have happened is irrelevant, that's true. But what could happen in the future is - which is why drivers are awarded points/ banned/ required to retest etc as appropriate. If this is the first indication that this driver is no longer as competent as they were and they live on the route from the bus-stop to the school (just a guess but DSD was on her way to school and wasn't early) then it may just be a matter of time before she 'strikes again'.

  • It could be that your DSD wasn't watching where she was going and she walked into the side of the car when it was reversing out. This happened to my elderly dad a couple of years ago.

My dad had stopped as there were cars coming on the main road and a teenage boy on the pavement, ran into the side of my dad's car. There was no damage to the car, but the boy managed to break his collar bone which caused him to fall and then he bumped his head. Luckily, his mum saw it all, so the boy was told off and my dad was asked if he was okay.

TBH I think she would have told it like it was if she had walked into a stationary car - and laughed at herself in the process.

I'm sorry to hear this, and I understand why you are reacting this way, but she has had a shock, been hurt and had a visit to hospital. I think what she needs is peace, quiet, time to recover and cuddles. Don't under-estimate the effects of the accident, it is probably too much to cope with just now, so cut her some slack, leave it until she recovers and then bring it up again.

That's pretty much what we're all doing. It'll be interesting to see how she feels when she wakes up tomorrow and her arm's even more swollen.

I'm going to check out her FB page (assuming she hasn't unfriended me LOL) and see if there are any clues in what she and her friends are saying.

Hmmm... I guessed correctly, according to her status on FB it was her friend's granny who was driving. Have printed it out just in case.
