Carpet cleaning with a Rug Doctor

ah thanks for that, perhaps i might have to ask hubby for help. our lounge isn't that big 4.8 meters by 4.2, but i'd imagine using something heavy for even a short while wouldn't do my back any favours at the mo.
i agree about the dirty water, i love seeing how dirty it is, but also freak out at how dirty it is,lol.0 -
We used rug doctor justbefore christmas. Wemoved into this house in summer, the carpets are at least thirty years old in places, probably older and its on a dairy farm...people tramping through with boots on over the years. An example of age is the ''cream'' sitting room carpet that WAS pink ...and is now only pink on some corners and places under furnture where sun in the last decades never reached. We didn't know this until cleaning it.
I wANT a rug doctor to own. The ''cream'' carpet was clean and fresh, the carpets with animal stainswere brilliant and fragrant. It is a bulky and unattractive item but it really, really does its job. I also have continued to buy the stain sprays, as I have never used anything as effective EVER. Note, that some of them say to apply 24 hours BEFORE cleaning,so nip out and get them before the hire of the rug doctor for maximum impact if needed.

I've hired a machine from my local hardware store for next week. It was £19, and the lovely men have even agreed to deliver it for me.
I can't comment as haven't used yet, but I've heard its good, and £19 seems cheap to me.0 -

It is heavy and clunky. Stairs would be a no-no for me lifting (I have some now:j v. minor mobility issues and a duff back). But I found using it on straight runs with no furniture moving not too bad nor getting down and using the little attachment for fiddly bits too dreadful.0 -
it would be used on straight run, as we thought we could open french doors and put the sofas on the patio ( on a dry day, lol) then it be easier to clean the carpet in an empty room.
Well i think i might give this a wizz . will wait till weather a bit warmer and all kids are better. be a nice job to get jobbed.
Thanks everyone0 -
Rug Doctors are brilliant I am even considering buying my own. My carpets are light coloured and have had all sorts of spills on them with having a child but it's always brought them up like new. Word of warning though-you can easily become addicted to cleaning your carpets once you see the results! Enjoy0

well we have a cream carpet in out lounge with cream sofas and i have 3 children , 3 cats and a baby on the way. good job i enjoy cleaning, lol.
i didn't know you could buy them , i thought they were commerical thingys only. i don't have any spare space in the understairs cupboard tho. i like things out of sight when not in use.0 -
I agree, they are excellent and great with animals/kids, we always use bold washing liquid instead of the expensive stuff they sell you (just tell them you have some left from last time) and it still brings all the stains out and smells lovely!Real men never follow instructions; after all they are just the manufacturer's opinion on how to put something together.0

I've used a rug doctor and I was pretty impressed with the results. They are heavy though, and it can be quite a big job if you want to do the whole house. One thing I did notice though was that the carpets were quite wet afterwards, so you definitely need to plan it for a couple of nice days so you can leave the windows etc open to dry it out thoroughly. Also make sure that everyone wears light coloured socks, just in case any dye rubs off on the damp carpets
Just a thought - it might be worth asking on your local freecycle for the detergents etc (if you're a member) as I'd imagine that loads of people have got bits leftover. The high traffic area cleaner is pretty good too.0 -
as this has dropped down the OS board, ive merged it with the older thread on the rug doctor
ZipA little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men
