After a weekend of sick children we are going to hire a Rug Doctor to remove the delightful aroma of vomit! I was wondering if there was an alternative to the Rug Doctor detergents as they can work out quite expensive.

Some people here have used (very diluted) Stardrops with their Vax.
Are you renting the RugDoctor? You may be liable for any problems that occur with the machine if you use anything other than their approved soap. My Morrisons only rents the RugDoctor with the soap included, so you may find that's the case where you live too.0 -
We can rent one near us without buying their cleaner. We have to clean ours regulary as we have 2 dogs and cream carpets so we bought the big size detergent and it has lasted us quite a while. We did run out last time we used it so OH used stardrops just to finish off, but I would be careful as OH said the girl spent ages checking it over when he returned it.0

Hi - I've used the shampoo made for vax machines which I bought locally at a good price, much less than the "approved" stuff. Worked fine and doesn't foam as it's formulated for 3-in-1 machines.0

Our cream carpet has a few stains here and there, and we are going to be selling our house soon. Can anyone recommend the cheapest way to do it? How much are the carpet cleaners to hire ?
Thanks:beer:0 -
I hired a small carpet cleaner from HSS Hire for the weekend-worked out 33 quid for 48 hours. We did the whole house with it. Was strangely fascinating-all that muck come out of the carpets0

We had to buy their own shampoo when we rented the rug doctor. I used it at half the recommended strength and it was very good.
If you have any left, then next time you rent one, if you take the bottle down with you, they'll let you off buying another bottle of shampoo.
If you have any Tesco clubcard points you can use them for Johnson's cleaners vouchers, and most Johnson's branches rent out the rug doctor. Its about £18 a day, so £3.75 worth of Tesco clubcard points would near-enough cover it (cos they're worth 4x value if spent on Clubcard deals).0 -

Just to point out, we went to our local Johnsons today as hubby had a suit to pick up. We asked about using Tesco vouchers to hire their rug doctor. Unfortunately you can't do it. You can use Mr T vouchers for clothes cleaning but not hiring the rug doctor machine. Apparently the rug doctor isn't theirs. They hire it out on behalf of the rug doctor co and take a cut.:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0 -

Hi
I have and with fairly good results, not the same as professionals but I was using it on a cream carpet and furnitureMortgage, we're getting there with the end in sight £6587 07/23, otherwise free of the debt thanks to MSE help!0 -
I use the rug doctor cleaner every 18mths on all our carpets. With 3 young children they get dirty very quickly and the carpet cleaner makes a big difference. The cleaner is very noisy and does need refilling frequently but my oh and I work together for an evening when the kids are in bed and get all downstairs done. We only hire the cleaner for 24hrs and have the whole house done. the carpets do stay quite wet and smell (clean smell) for a while but I think its worth it.0
