See this advice on BBC's 'Don't Get Done, Get Dom' not sure if it has been mentioned on the forum before.
If your card and pin has been used fraudulently and you are certain the card has not left your possession and you report such issue to the bank, it appears that they are very quick to tell you to cut your card up in particular cutting through the chip.
By doing this, it completely stops your chances of having the 'log' of the use of that exact card being extracted from the chip, thus meaning you cannot prove that your card and pin was cloned etc.
Not sure if the program that aired on the 23/04/2012 is on iplayer/catchup but it was certainly an interesting and informative article.

their - 'owned by them'
they're - 'they are'

i watched this yesterday. Usually at the end of the program he's got the money back and everyone is happy. It was a bit of a suprise how it ended with Dom failing and the woman losing almost £17k!This is a system account and does not represent a real person. So how are you supposed to safely dispose of expired cards then if you are not supposed to cut them up? Genuine question. Cut them up but just don't cut through the chip? Or something else?0

The OP was on about fraudulent use of your card and how to dispose of it, not expired cards.0 -

Yup as a record of transactions on that particular card are stored on the chip, although as Dom said,it's something the banks would rather people didn't know...:p0 -
Banks also have records pf transactions made using your card and whether they were verified by chip and PIN.
Banks can also tell whether a counterfeit card has been used. It's not a secret.0 -

Agreed, its no secret, however the issue that was discussed on the program was how it is only the chip on your actual card that would be able to prove if it was your card that was used and not a cloned/copied card.0 -

Banks can tell from the transaction details whether the chip was read on the card. They don't physically need the card to do this. If the chip has been read, it's not a counterfeit card.0 -

You may be right, however l can only go by what the experts were saying during the program. There was a professor who was adamant that it was only the genuine card chip that could back up the data on the computer logs of the transactions.
All l know is that after seeing how the woman in the story suffered l will not being cutting up my chip and pin should l suspect fraudulent use.0 -

I don't think this is true. From what they were saying on the program if your card has been copied correctly then the banks transaction details state that your actual card was used to make the transaction. Even when it wasn't your card that does this.
The only thing that can prove that your card didn't make the transaction is the chip on your card. If you destroy your card then you lose this evidence and you won't win any appeal.
They had a few experts on the program explaining this. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
