My card got cloned recently the the fraudsters paid a large parking fine, bought road tax and insured two cars with Tesco car insurance. I got my money back but never did find out if the thieves got caught. I thought it a bit stupid to insure and tax cars with a fraudulant card.
You can't trust people if you won't tell them your pin. By that simple act you are saying you don't trust them as if you did then you would be happy for them to know your pin.
Frankly if you can't trust your OH with your pin number then its a sad indication of the strength of your relationship! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
A published UNIVERSITY research paper 4 years ago shot this pedalled myth out of the water first hit.
The banks "opted" for cheaper security and ignored dozens of security experts warnings, the data can be intercepted with a safety pin, 30 pence of wire and a laptop or PDA from any chip and pin reader and the banks bloody well know this, well not everyone at the banks does, they certainly dont tell those who's job it is to deny it happens.
Once the crook has the data, the card and chip are cloned very quickly.
The banks spent millions on legal bills and injunctions fighting the research paper, they failed to suppress the truth.
IIRC The study (if it's the Cambridge one), still requires the C&P card to actually be present.
It's a weakness in the comms between the chip in the card, and the reader in the terminal.
It still requires you have a valid card, and for the fraudsters to have a compromised reader, as it fools the card into thinking it's a chip and sig transaction, whilst the reader thinks it's a chip and pin.
No cloning of the card's chip, just using a dummy card (or some wiring) to let you get between the real card's chip and the reader so the data can be modified.
Something that would be pretty obvious in any situation where the people doing the transaction are not in on it.
So if the woman still had the card in her possession, it's quite unlikely that method was used...(it bypasses the pin requirement, not the chip).0 -
A bit of a devil's advocate post here from me...At the moment, a chip can't be cloned so this "experts" advice can be taken with a pinch of salt. I'd rather follow my banks advice.I feel I must go back to the main point which is that the only definitive proof that it was or wasn't her card rests on the chip of her card. This is why you should not destroy your card!0

The day before a chip is first cloned, it can't be cloned. Who is to say that what happened here wasn't the first instance of one being cloned?
But how are you going to get that evidence? Take it to your bank? Will you believe what they say?
I would suggest that you resort to the chip in the card as the last possible line of defence. Go through the normal fraud measures and if they say that your card was definitely used and you are 100% sure that it wasn't used then you should find an independent expert who can check the chip.
Although I don't actually believe the banks are corrupt and if evidence on your chip shows that it wasn't used for the transaction I suspect they would admit it and refund the money. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
