Can anyone tell me please, how to preserve them in some way? If I shell them, can they be frozen?

They'll keep in their shells until at least the new year ;)

If it's not already been done, I scrub off the remains of the outer casing (it will go black and mouldy otherwise) and keep then in a nut bowl on the dresser.

Yes you can shell them and freeze them. You can also shell them and store them in a jar. Great for breads, salads, or just munching :p

your welcome, i leave them in the top oven when cooking the roast then put them in the bottom oven with the door open when roast finished.

when they are cool just bung them in a nut bowl somewhere and crack as wanted :)

see us old meno birds are useful for some things lol

There is some advice on storing walnuts on these threads:

    Help with Walnuts Please

What to do with a lot of walnuts.....?

I'll add your thread to the first link later to keep the suggestions together.

Did you know that walnuts stain your fingers in a horrible blacky-brown colour? Well, mine and my OH's went like this straightaway and it's Day 4 since we foraged a few walnuts. I shelled them last night and it was made worse when cracking the fleshy casing and then stony shell in the middle. DD wasn't best pleased either as she helped me and her nails looked rather messed up:eek:

anyway, just thought i'd let you know that walnuts at my end of the country (notts) are ready to pick (as in windfalls. not sure if they're meant to be picked off the tree yet as i've not done that before).

NB. here's a link for more info that i've found about prepping them -http://www.sacredearth.com/ethnobotany/foraging/Walnuts.php

if i knew about them staining, i would of worn gloves! grr! i had to explain to my work colleagues about this and hopefully they believed me.

I got four carrier bags of walnuts this year and English walnuts are known here as wet walnuts, I picked mine a couple of weeks ago or the squirrels would have had them. It is normal for them to have that black inside and it used to be used as ink. I swapped 3 bags of walnuts with my local Greengrocer who loves them and I got pickling onions for the swap
    happy days:D
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Yes, black walnut husk can be used as a source of fabric or wool dye or for dyeing your hair. Bad news is that it's permenant. Good news is that as the walnut dries out the concentration of the dye ingredient decreases.
