  • lucky you! I love walnuts. If they are in their shells they keep for months in a cool dry place. They are quite calorific, but they are also really good for you. They reckon that if you eat 5 walnuts a day you help keep your blood healthy in your veins and arteries. I like them in salads, and also chopped into greek yoghurt with honey.

not the healthiest of ideas, but once I had caramel shortbread from costco and instead of chocolate on top, it had a layer of walnuts on the caramel and just a drizzle of white chocolate. Not only was it the most divine thing I've ever eaten but it looked really impressive.

yesterday I bought all the ingredients to reproduce it including a big bag of walnuts, although it doesn't really fit in that well with my healthy eating/diet plan :o

Although I buy walnut pieces for baking I find them too big. My food processor is too quick to reduce them to nearly powder, so I end up chopping them by hand, which takes forever and a day, AND the wretched things tend to skedaddle across the worktop and onto the floor. Is there a small chopper machine especially for nuts and other hard foods? and if so can any one point me in the right direction, please?

Hi addiscomber, I put them in a sturdy plastic bag and just bash them with a rolling pin. I'd like to know if there's a better way too as it's not perfect but better than the food processor. I wonder if a coarse mincer would do it ? I don't have one any more, so I'd be grateful for suggestions too !
  • Hi there,
I find it easy to use a Mezzaluna (sp?) one of those herb chopping thingies with a curved blade, takes alot less time as you can chop up a few at once.
I only have a single bladed one but my mother has a double bladed one which would be even better.

Plastic bag and rolling pin works for me everytime. If you also wrap the bag in a clean tea towel, it helps contain things should the bag split.

I can also, whilst bashing, imagine that plastic bag to be anyone or anything I want it to be. Great stress relief :D
