Dear me, this place is full of judgemental self righteous people!
My Dad and his last wife applied for a council property about 30 years ago, I don't know exactly the circumstances. Since then, over the 30 years, he's grown a successful business remarried and my mum has her own small part time business too. Their area has mostly been bought by the tenants of former council houses, but they continue to rent, enjoying the benefits of having 'landlords'. Eventually they might buy it, they might not.
They are not scum, they are hard working tax paying citizens. I absolutely DESPISE the assumption that council properties are for lazy single mothers, who have a baby for a free house. Or that the tenants are somehow less human, moral or reasonable. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING A COUNCIL TENANT, it doesn't make you a bad person.
It's no-ones business to judge other peoples life decisions based on being a council tenant!Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Hi
I haven't had the chance to read all 11 pages, but OP if you haven't already done so, contact your local sure start children's centre (free services from the antenatal period until your child is 5 years old). Every community has access to their services - someone from their family support team will be able to visit and support you, I would ask them about doing a CAF (Common Assessment Framework to support you (including housing and other things that you may benefit from).0 -
What i find incredulous are the Jeremy Kyle comments .
We really don't know why she got pregnant. As a teenager I didn't make any wise decisions and although, I never fell pregnant, my incredibly low self esteeme meant responsible decisions often fell out of the window. I drifted through my teenage years and how I came through the other side I'll never know. But I could have been that girl.
So you can judge all you like and spout contraceptive statistics, the fact is she's in this position so it's no use telling her what she should have done.
I hope it works out for her. Things happen and to all those who managed to plan, good on you, I wish I had had the gumption and the confidence to do so.
I'm just interested how an op on here managed to buy a house at 18 seven years ago. Because even with a handout from the bank of mum and dad, people's wages at 18 don't generally get them a mortgage.MSE Forum's favourite nutter :T0 -

Doesn't seem quite so admirable when you look at it from the "pull the ladder up, Jack, I'm OK" angle.
I agree. I dont understand why people are allowed to live in social housing when they no longer need to be in it. Surely it should only be for people who can afford nothing else/have fallen on bad times?
Although I would guess most people who can afford to move out of it, would do, into a nicer area anyway. But Im sure there are some - like this one posted about.0 -

Into a nicer area. What is one of those? Middleclassness?
Maybe some people make a home out of the place they are living. Isn't that, the idea of social housing?Fred - Where's your get up and go?
Barney - It just got up and went.

In an ideal world I would agree with you 100%, but an accidental pregnancy does happen.
66 years ago my Dear Mum got pregnant with me, unmarried,
Wartime, 21 years old. In those times there was the stigma, no help, great religious pressure, Catholic family, if my Dear Nan had not been such a great Mum and human being I dont know where Mum or I would be, I think some compassion and humanity is needed here. The OP is only just out of childhood,
66 years ago there were no reliable methods of contraception and little sex education; nowadays there's no excuse for "accidental" pregnancies.0 -

As far as I'm aware no form of contraception is 100% reliable for every person. IIRC there is a regular poster on here who has a huge brood because of the medical problems she has with all types.Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan
