    I got mine yesterday.

I don't see the point - I always have my card on me anyway. (And given that I've yet to find anywhere using contactless, I can't see that changing soon.)

it seems just like a stepping stone. i imagine in 5-10 years time no-one will carry plastic cards and banks will not automatically give you or maybe even charge you 1. similiar to cheques at the moment.

this year visa and mastercard and rolling out mobile apps that will allow you all add all your cards to a mobile wallet. more and more businesses are accepting this NFC based payment.

it will be the same as you used to only pay by card in big shops and restaurants. now most people do in mcdonalds/the local corner shop. the safe will happen with NFC as the banks are already encouraging their customers (retailers) to upgrade to NFC equipment. many retailers already have the equipment and just dont have it enabled on their accounts. others have it and have it enabled but have no idea what it is and don't realise they can accept it.

Its mostly been fast food outlets to date, such as mcdonalds and subway - used my amex a few times. But other stores starting to trial it now such as tesco, so won't be long till it gets critical mass level and its rolled out everywhere.

some examples near me in manchester:

all nandos accept contactless (although most staff have no idea)
    slug and lettuce
    BANK clothing
    boost juice bars
slug and lettuce (throughout the UK)
    little chef
    officers club clothing
    mcdonalds
co-op food (4 in manc city centre and all within the m25 - london)
    random newsagents
    EAT food
    pret a manger
    aldi
    a foreign currency place
almost all bars (although, again, most staff are unaware)
    loooooads of restaurants
all Greggs the bakers (>£3 for all cards annoyingly)
    caffe nero
    boots in liverpool
most subways (sandwiches) although weirdly not the Manchester city centre branches!
    all branches of timpsons
whsmith in airports/train stations (such as manchester picadilly)
and the post office are currently rolling it out nationally - all of london before the olympics

there's loads more in london and liverpool as these were contactless trial cities

that's all i can think of off the top of my head.

look for machines with 4 LEDs near the top of the screen. ask to pay by card - but dont put ur card into the machine until it lights up. if it displays the contactless symbol - your good to go!

they use this in cafe nero

    this in aldi

this in most other places in black or silver

So if there is no difference between this and the contactless credit card, where does the mobile phone come in? Presumably you could stick the tag to anything such as a watch, or just keep it in your wallet and wave it?

Used to do this with a card for entering a building.

you can stick it to whatever you like. phone, wallet, watch, keyring, other card, or you could dress up as harry potter - stick it to the end of a magic wand and pretend to be a wizard paying for things.

but if you stick it to your wallet/another card etc - make sure they don't have anything else RFID/NFC in/on them as the signals could both be read at the same time and the card reader may not accept either of them until you separate them.

David Icke right yet again... This is a totalitarian tiptoe towards a micro-chipped and controlled population. We are being turned into borgs. Once these mobile phone payments start going wrong (lost or stolen mobiles etc) there will be calls for greater security. The end result will be a microchip (the mark of the Beast) in all humans without which none shall buy or sell. The (deliberate) crashing of the Euro/Dollar and all fiat money systems will be the first step towards this end goal. Me? A tin foil hat nutter? Call me whatever you like. You ain't seen nothin' yet. For goodness sake - WAKE UP!

Got my PayTag but haven't used it yet.

I've got an iPhone with a case on it, but does anyone know if I take the case off, stick it to the actual phone and put the case back on, if it will still work?

    --

I think it's just another easier way to pay - and it's covered. Like has been said before, If someone mugs me for my wallet, then cash is gone. If someone steals my phone/pay tag, Barclaycard covers the fraudulent transactions, my phone is insured and I can remotely track/wipe it.

Most people who are going to mug you, are either idiotic teenagers or drug addicts, not everyone is a master mind criminal who can take your phone and suddenly ruin your entire life with it. If they could do that - they could take control of Air Force One with a Nokia 3210
