If someone steals my phone they don't get anything. It has a pin so they can't access my data.
Just remove the battery to stop you using 'remote wipe' and the gps functions. Once they get to their workshop, they can then power up the handset, bypass the pin in about 5 minutes and get all of your data. The phone is then shipped abroad and used on a network where it isn't barred (or they change the ESN).

When they start putting backup batteries in phones (unlikely as they are paranoid about weight and size), they'll probably start wrapping the phones in tin foil :)

So don't rely on your phones functions to keep your phone safe.

Your phone probably cost around £400, and maybe you are paying insurance on it just in case someone decides to steal it. I prefer to just pay with cash/card and not advertise my phone type to everyone in the queue. Heck, if where am I is busy, I won't even answer it.

If you're so worried about your phone being stolen that you don't actually use it, it's time to buy a less valuable phone.

I would really like to know the source/links of this information. My own research shows that any attempt to bypass the pin would require a hard reset of the phone which deletes all data.

    It probably varies by OS

But even then, if it was wiped, user data will probably still be accessible using the right tools - and anything stored on any external storage card (sd) will usually be easily accessible pin or no pin

Then surely you must know you are in a tiny minority - and can't expect the world to hold back technological progress just because you don't want it?

    People are ridiculously paranoid nowadays...

So even though its using the same system as contactless debit/credit cards, they are going to work in a completely different way?

I wonder if the paytag is linked to your card or if its a completely different number so they know it's a paytag.

afaik - it's the card itself that triggers the "request chip and pin" sometimes - so the paytags just won't do this. the same way as the visa mobile phone app won't do it, google wallet doesnt do it, orange quick tap doesn't do it, etc.

it is linked to your card - it will be like an additional card holder - so a different card number but the same account - or so say barclaycard

true - if they remove the battery immediately and ship it to a foreign country where it isn't barred then i guess they're fine to keep using it - but it seems unlikely this would happen with most phones that are stolen! as soon as they turn the phone back on...my remote wipe would take effect as long as it was connected to a data network/wifi. i would have barred the SIM so getting past my PIN code would get them nothing...i also have my android phone encrypted which as far as i know - they can't get past - especially not in 5 minutes - they would need to wipe they phone (don't use external media like an SD card but if it did it would also be encrypted).

don't pay for insurance - work for the coop so we get free mobile phone insurance form coop bank.

so i still feel pretty safe with it. personal choice if you choose not to use ur phone in public but im pretty sure ur in the minority there.

If someone steals my phone they don't get anything. It has a pin so they can't access my data. I have a remote wipe facility to wipe everything off it. I call my network and they cancel the sim and bar the handset. I call Barclaycard and they cancel the paytag and refund me any transactions I didn't authorise. They criminals can also be tracked by the police as my phone has gps.

If someone steals my wallet with my cash in it they get all my cash with no way of tracing it or cancelling it.

You call Barclaycard do you? On what, the phone thats legging it down the road? Ok u use a payphone? Oh hang on you have no cash to use one, this is all assuming you werent seriosuly injured during the mugging.

With regards your phone security you really, really think of it a tad to highly, any phone can be hacked incredably easily by someone who knows what they are doing, the phone then usually has a jailbroken version of an OS installed and there is no way your provider can either wipe it remotley or the police catch them. Its insane that finicial companies whos security is failing daily introduce new technology that can be expoloited. madness.
