We have enough to pay him for the structural, its all the rest we need it for!

£80k for fitting out. That's a lot of money.

Suggest you start a thread with some detail. Value of property, current mortgage etc and see if one of the resident brokers has any ideas.

Did you obtain approval of the NW prior to commencing the work. As technically its in breach of your mortgage conditions if you didn't.

Getting more and more annoyed with Nationwide. We informed them of their mistake in the purchase price almost two weeks ago and none has been done about it. Mortgage advisor was off for a week and no one could help and now she is off for half the week ignoring messages. I am getting fed up with the whole process and if we wouldn't have to stay with them to not incure the EPC I would go to another lender.

We still don't know if the valuer has revalued the property at the normal purchase price, if they are willing to lend us the amount we require and if they will put the retainer on the mortgage. So much for a quick purchase of an empty house.
  • Never again will I apply for anything with Nationwide. They have caused me and my wife one of the most stressful times of our life. My wife had a baby in November and I thought that was stressful but Nationwide have surpassed that by a fair margin.

I'm now in the 10th week of a mortgage application and I am still been given the run around by Nationwide. They ask for single documents at a time and to review one document, they quote a timescale of 5-7 working days. Then they ask for another document and the same timescales then apply. Not only have I been fed lies by their customer service but the way they have gone about this is absolutely horrendous. I have had to cancel building work a number of times because one minute I am told by Nationwide that the mortgage offer is imminent and the next thing they want more documents with unacceptable timescales. I appreciate they are busy and we may not be their only client but to give you an example of what they did: due to unforseen circumstances, we had to change solicitors and Nationwide asked for an ammendment form to be sent to them. My mortage broker didn't put the new solicitors postcode of the form. Instead of just getting it from Royal Mail, search engines or just asking me or my mortage broker, they ask for the form to be sent again and just to look at the postcode it's another 5-7 working days! I have spent so much time and effort as has my mortage broker trying to get this resolved that I've began to have sleepless nights wondering why Nationwide are being so awkward when we had a decision accepted in principle 10 weeks ago. I have lost out on a buyer for my old house too as I cannot risk being left homeless with an 8 month old child. A word of advice to anyone wanting a mortage from Nationwide: You may have to pay a little bit more with someone else but believe me, IT IS WORTH IT for the sake of your sanity and your own health. I have lost count at the number of times my wife has sat there crying because of Nationwide.

Anthony I would be grateful for some help also. Having previosly applied for a full DIP my full mortgage application was submitted on 6th June, I was informed the offer would take ten days to come through. I applied directly in branch and made it clear that time was important as my vendor needs to move very quickly. After nine working days further documents were requested and supplied, I've heard nothing since and am keen to know if Nationwide are satisfied with the evidence produced. Even the mortgage advisor in branch is unable to help as she gets no replies to her messages to head office!

Thanks Anthony, after many calls I finally heard my offer was issued just before 4pm on Friday, so just waiting for the paperwork now. Head office had not got back to me but when they eventually responded to the in branch advisor wanted even more documentation which she told them was ridiculous and subsequentally the offer was issued. Perhaps to help future customers Nationwide could ask for all documentation upfront, I was willing to provide any info they wanted but couldn't affort more delays.

I eventually got my mortgage offer through last week from Nationwide after a bit of messing about saying they didnt have documents I had provided them with. Anyway, I got a txt/email on the saturday to say it had been approved but the paperwork didnt arrive until the Wednesday or Thursday I think as it was sent 2nd class - dont worry if it takes a few days to turn up!

My latest hurdle (at the very end of the very long process of submitting document after document and the 5 day turnaround restarting every time a new submission is made!) is that my solicitor is no longer on the Nationwide panel. You would think they could have told me sooner. You would also think they would have informed my solicitor. This slow progress is painful!

Exactly the same happened to me (YBS, not Nationwide).

Stupid, as the solicitor knew who the mortgage co was on Day 1
The mortgage co knew who the solicitor was on Day 1
Joe Public (ie. me) didn't know there was such a thing as a panel.

So whose responsibility was it to check?
    Apparantly, nobody's.

Makes you wonder if conveyancers just do it all by rote, instead of considering each case

We are also having a nightmare with Nationwide. We had our survey done on the 7th June, which was satisfactory. We then didn't hear anything at all. We have chased it up with our broker, but keep going round in circles and don't appear to be getting anywhere at all. On Friday we were told it would be sorted out by today, but today when I phoned, they say they can't help me!
They apparently had 2 cases open on their system for us, which has caused the delay, but they don't appear to be getting their finger out to get it sorted!
  • I'm a bit worried reading these threads. I applied on 16 June, the valuation has been done and I've answered their initial queries. I called today to be told there 'is a technical issue with the valuation, don't worry everything is ok' they say once this is sorted it my application will be sent to the underwriters. I know there is nothing wrong with the valuation as I've seen it, so what on earth does this mean? I'm a first time buyer buying from a couple who are not buying anything, this should be a straightforward one house purchase but i'm finding it very stressful!
