  • Well we are home but our last night/day did not exactly go to plan! DS1 kept me up half the night as he felt ill. He said he was better this morning so we decided to drive the Coastal Route home and stop at various places on the way. First stop was Bamburgh but only to see the castle from the outside as it would have been £30 to go in! We then headed to Seahouses with the idea of possibly going to the Farne Islands but DS1 threw up in the car park when we got there :(. We drove on through Walkworth and then stopped at Amble for an ice cream for DS2. At this point DS1 started sobbing that he couldn't swallow and he felt really ill so I called the docs and made an appointment for 3pm. We drove straight home and he went to bed for an hour. Doc has confirmed tonsillitis and he has antibiotics, however he's just thrown up again :(. I'm whacked!

We had an ok time away overall but we won't go back. Holiday park holidays aren't for us and they aren't fun on a shoestring budget. I had thought it would be ideal to keep the kids entertained for free but it's not like that and it's very much geared to extra spending. Loved the caravan though so would do that again, just not at a major park.

Feeling a bit deflated at the moment. Sick of penny pinching and worrying about covering everything. Going to have a root about for things to sell/ways to save. Need to do some comping too.

  • :( we also found that with caravan parks. We went to Haven & butlins on sun token holidays. Super cheap to stay there and we ended up spending hundreds on entertainment :( NOT cheap! Would have been cheaper to get a real SUN holiday abroad all inclusive and just not take spending money (no need anyway if all inclusive!) so that's what i've said from now on i'd rather save for a proper holiday than one here as weather is usually rubbish and entertainment is expensive and food is even worse from the likes of the spar and londis (only shops on camp!)

I hope your lil man is feeling better soon and that you've got yourself a big bottle of wine to get over the hol and get yourself a nice early night ;) hugs xxx

  • Totally agree DFW, I said the same thing about abroad being a cheaper option to DH. I'm pleased we went but next time we will do something different (although it prob still wont be abroad!). I took food etc with us but we forgot the soap and coffee so the overpriced Spar still got some custom . The main bugbear was that to get to the swimming pool you had to go through all the amusements so until I "forgot" to take my bag with me it cost us a fortune!

DS1 still vomiting :( Can't see how the antibiotics can be working when they are projected back out again. Poor boy.

Decided I need to say something positive as I've done nothing but whinge. When I arrived home I was greeted by my newly planted Rhododendrons in full flower in the garden. They look amazing! :D

  • sounds like all these amusements are the same! I know the one by the lake district was like that. You had to walk through the amusements to get to the restaurant, the swimming pool, the park and the bit where the disco's and bingo etc was held!!! Not impressed! My friend goes abroad all inclusive for less than £500 per person for 2 weeks i'm thinking this is def the cheaper option now! (although still not cheap if you get what i mean lol) so as soon as debt is gone i'm saving up! i'm def a beach, book & cocktail girl anyway not a butlins, bingo & cold weather lass!

  • Me too! Our next trip abroad will be an expensive one as DS1 needs a new passport, DS2 has never had one, mine runs out later this year so I'll need another one too and then insurance of DH will be astronomical. However, after all that is paid for the rest will be cheap as chips compared to H@ven. And less chavs :p.

  • Was that Monday's episode? I missed that one! We were lucky in that our caravan 'neighbours' were fine but there were plenty of them elsewhere in the park! I sound like a right snob :o. I'm not, honest!!

Sorry to hear things didn't go quite how you hoped but glad you got some time away

Skint was an eye opener this week, makes you realise there are worse lives to be lived. Does that sound really snobby?

    Hope DS feels better soon

Welcome home, Lucky. :) Am glad you got a change of scenery even though your trip didn't work out quite the way you might have hoped.

You've reinforced my impression of organised holiday camps - will stick to being an independent traveller; honestly believe it's easier [and much cheaper] once you get organised with camping kit.

Hope DS isn't keeping you up tonight. You're right, the antib.s won't take effect if the poor child can't keep anything down. Doubtless you'll be on the 'phone to the surgery again first thing, if his tummy hasn't settled by then.

You certainly can't complain that your life is boring, Lucky. ((Hugs)) :smileyhea

Haggerston castle really is not for shoe strings. It's geared, like many, to cost quite a bit on top especially with kids, but then most of the caravan parks in Berwick are like that. Money for this, that and on the way there to begin with! Glad you had a few decent days weather though, been so hit and miss lately.

Out of interest where did you do the soft play? My bro was looking for a decent one up here, but in the end they did Edinburgh museums as they didn't find anything.

Hope thing are heading along ok for you all!
