I use cheques a day or so before payday to get my shopping. My cheque has always been honoured and i admit to finding it a convenience. Yes i understand where some of you are coming from but am Annoyed for those of us that don't abuse the systemIt's nice to be nutty but's more important to be nice0

Only one thing to say to this.
PLAN YOUR MONEY MORE!
You'll find lots of useful tools on this website to plan your money and make sure you have enough to last you through the month with the money you have. I'm sure you can easily throw your cheque book in the bin.
Can't understand why anyone would want to use them. They take ages to process, has massive amounts of fraud and I really get annoyed with people in checkouts issuing checks.
I remember last year in my Tesco's a elderly woman wanted to pay for some really basic items and it came to about £3. She faffed around with a cheque book and the cashier didn't know how to process it! I was in a real rush and just paid for it myself as she had no other method of payment! How stupid!
Anyway, atleast this won't be happening anymore

I recently had to use my cheque book as there was a problem with the chip in my card - If this happens when the cheque book is no longer accepted then I would be stuck.
I'm not sure you'd be entirely stuck. Retailers still have the option of swiping credit and debit cards (they have to because not all foreign cards have chips) and requesting a signature.0 -

How do you know how much money I have either?
Please don't knock me as you don't know me from Adam.........
As for the old woman, that's her prerogative, and hardly her fault the cashier didn't know how to process cheques.... A little more patience needed I feel!
Sorry to rant but it annoys me when people automatically assume things. It's nice to be nutty but's more important to be nice0 -

Hoorah, hopefully other shops will follow suit!
About time we stopped the grannies from spending 20 minutes at the checkout digging out their chequebooks, then digging out their pen, then asking how much it comes to, then asking again, then opening their chequebook, then asking again, then writing the amount, then asking who it should be paid to, then asking the date, then writing the cheque, then filling in the stub, then starting again because they got the amount wrong, then handing the !!!!!! over complete with a 'cheque guarantee card', which just so happens to be a bloomin VISA DEBIT card they could have paid with anyway!
ANOTHER VICTORY FOR COMMON SENSE!0 -
When did this world become so impatient and hostile.
If you don't want to wait behind the granny (who in my opinion is usually a much loved treasure) then you should go to another till and if there is no other then moan at the shop not the granny.
As for planning your money better. It must be wonderful to either have all the time to plan every penny perfectly or not have to worry that much about it.
Most people I know (myself included) work to a budget and with 5 children sometimes you have to do your shopping when you can.
Lets try and be more understanding and flexible which is a priveledge that the shops are taking away with their actions.
As for security well there is always another lot coming up with ways to commit fraud and it didn't seam to be long ago that shell were having problems with some kind of chip and pin fraud. The details of that I am not sure about. Its better to be late in this life than early in the next one.

Just thought it may be of interest to some of you out there...
Good for them! Shell petrol stations have already stop accepting cheques. I think every supermarket should do the same. It always annoys me when the person in front of me paid by cheque. I would then make a comment to the cashier saying how much longer it takes when somebody pays by cheque instead of by credit card or cash - and make sure the customer in front heard me!0 -
Well how about freedom of choice.
Why should it be up to a commercial company to offer you freedom of choice?
Would you like the freedom to barter with goats at Tesco? "Ooooh, sorry love, I've forgot my wallet, but I've got a herd in the car park, what's the going rate today?"
Also, there's no reason why you should be able to buy stuff if you don't have the money in your account. Regardless of when you think you'll be getting paid. As far as I can tell it's tantamount to fraud.0 -
do you realise that if you use chip and pin it can be debited from your account more than once without authorisation. i like many people embraced chip and pin originally until the time i went into a well known sports shop, spent a fairly large amount of money and paid with my card. only when checking my bank online a few weeks later did i find that i was well over my limit and had been charged this was because the sports shop had debited my card not once but twice over the course of several days. i then phoned my bank and had to explain the mess this took half an hour and as a gesture of goodwill they then refunded me back my nearly 60 quids worth of charges.i was then advised to fone the sports shop i did this and was messed about with for a few days while they tried to either locate the manager or put me through to head office only to be told that this had happened a good few times before and that they were 'sorry'. i subsequently went back to using cheques as i feel that they are safer (in my case) and i dont always like to carry alot of money around with me. i can understand alot of this is personal experience but it does make me smile to myself when i get my chequebook out at a till to the sigh of the cashier as when i explain my reasoning they tend to always say that they dont blame me. food for thought.0
