Asda to stop accepting Cheques

Cheques in retail stores should be banned. They slow the queue down whilst the person fumbles around for their cheque book, the guarantee card has to be checked.
I agree.
I work in a mobile phone store, and since I started in January, I've processed three (maybe four) cheques.
It takes about ten minutes to put the thing through the till, take customers' name and address, put it both ways through the printer, scan the cheque guarantee card, call an authorisation centre, give the details to some Indian bloke, wait for an authorisation number, write that on the back of the cheque, put the sale through as usual, then open the till seperately to put the cheque at the bottom of the cash boxes because it's too big to fit in the £10 hole.0 -
I dont see the point in paying by cheque. Just use a debit card!!!! Cheques are good for paying items in the post.0

But that isn't the fault of the customer, it is your company that has introduced those measures, anyway it keeps you in a job, and your company gets their money, win/win, no losers.;)0 -
Debenhams also have notices at their entrances notifying customers that they will no longer accept cheques from a certain date (can't remember the exact date).
I only really receive cheques from some ebay customers & only really use them for magazine/newspaper purchases...typically plant offers
I noticed that some have pointed to cheques being legal tender (presumably with guarantee details included), so I wondered if there is any legal position on their acceptance or the right to refuse?
ps - maybe the title should be changed to 'Retailers no longer accepting cheques' or something similar, with a list of retailers at the top...
Oh & pps - How long do you think it will be before some stores will only accept store card holders as customers?0 -

Cheques truly suck...there's nothing wose than being stuck behind someone at a checkout who's still stuck in 1976.

just so long as they're not in front in the supermarket queue!
In much the same way that we question why smokers should inflict their habit on passive bystanders, it is right to question (vehemently) why cheque writers should inflict their timewasting antiquated habits on others?

A lot of people here are talking rubbish, I have been held up more by people with cards than cheques! People forget pin, and so have to pull out another card, which is often declined as its not their main card, or they dont have enough cash on one card, so have to use another or they cant find one card, and spend minutes looking for it.
With cheques, its put it in printer, write guarantee number on back and thats it. I dont know where this "phone a call centre" stuff comes from.0 -
I use my cheque book every week for my butchers as they don't take switch. Also use it for Ebay when the seller does not have pay pal as an option.
My husband does not have a switch or visa card only a cheque book and guarantee card, so looks like he might have to change with the times now too.0
