    Our Tesco still takes cheques.
A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.

Why should it be up to a commercial company to offer you freedom of choice?

Would you like the freedom to barter with goats at Tesco? "Ooooh, sorry love, I've forgot my wallet, but I've got a herd in the car park, what's the going rate today?"

Also, there's no reason why you should be able to buy stuff if you don't have the money in your account. Regardless of when you think you'll be getting paid. As far as I can tell it's tantamount to fraud.

Now That comment is just rediculous. Goats. I ask you.

I am merely pointing out that yes most people might find the switch system better and believe it to be the ultimate in security (of which I am sure it is not) that in my opinion is no reason to penalise the people that like to use the older systems.

I do use switch on occasion and have also been caught with things being taken from my bank account twice as mentioned in an earlier post.

I have never written a cheque without knowing the money is in my account and am insulted that you would presume that I have. You do not know me.

I am merely saying that I work on a budget and writing amounts in the cheque stubs is what keeps me on track.
Its better to be late in this life than early in the next one.

    Slow down speed kills.

Hoorah, hopefully other shops will follow suit!
About time we stopped the grannies from spending 20 minutes at the checkout

Be very careful, you may, if you are lucky, one day grow up to be a " Granny ".

The reason there is a build up at checkouts is because the Supermarkets never employ enough checkout operators..simple fact.

Including the supermarkets, that's why they're doing it!

I wasn't having a go at you for writing cheques for money you didn't have, but plenty of people do.

And there are plenty of other ways of budgetting, which don't include cheque book stubs.

When did this world become so impatient and hostile.

    .

    ;)

It isn't a " world " thing, it is exclusive to the UK, where everybody has been brain washed over the years to race around like headless chickens.

In Spain, for instance, customers stand and natter with checkout operators, nobody seems to bother, but the job still gets done, with far less stress.

So then it is fraudulent of the banks to take 3 days to clear payments, it is the banks that are milking everyone, not the customer.

i use a cheque in tescos at least 3 out of 4 weeks of the month
i am not an old granny im 34 i have my cheque book ready in my hand when im packing it takes not much longer than using chip and pin
sometimes i have the money in my bank sometimes not but i have never had a cheque bounce not because i have a guarantee card but usually because my money goes in the bank just after my shop i go shopping when its handy for me i have 7 children and my husband works full time so i go shopping when i can so it definately helps with budgeting
some attitudes towards other peoples lives are just not on, how i choose to pay for my shopping should be my business
Extra payment every week challenge £15 so far

Well said, I fully empathise with you. My wife and I were shocked when we were in ASDA yesterday and read the notice saying they were planning not to take cheques.

You are right, how you choose to pay for your shopping should be your business.

I have had cause to use cheques in the past to pay for shopping and the store's reason for not taking them anymore (takes too long) is utter rubbish (it's to save them money), it takes no longer than someone with a chip and pin card getting cashback  . The cheque gets printed in a few seconds all you have to do is sign the damn thing. If the stores really wanted to save you time they'd have 2 members of staff at every checkout packing your shopping for you while you put it on the conveyor belt at the other end.

I've had plenty of times when the checkout person has just piled the food up into a massive heap as I'm trying to take stuff out of my trolley  - when they do this why the hell should I look like I'm trying to beat the world packing record and end up squashing all my food by packing the wrong things together as I'm in such a hurry. Instead I'll just take my time thank you.

Yes, we've all been behind an elderly person who has taken ages to do everything but just be PATIENT. Believe it or not you'll be old one day, and the last thing you'll be concerned about is how long it's taking to do your shopping  .

The point is that it's the store's business. They can choose whatever payment method they would like.

So it's annoyed a handful of people. Do they care? Nope :p

    PC World doesnt take cheques.

I dont mind them, in debenhams, people buy gift cards with cheques, then spend whats on the gift card only for the cheque to bounce.

I think the days of the cheque are going, but i dont think they should totally die out.
