it's been asked before, but I cant find a full answer.
when you've cleaned etc with vinegar, what about the smell? how long does it take for the smell to leave the house?*** Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly ***

Depends how much you've used and what you've used it on. I use it on the carpets throughout the house for stain removal every now and again ... probably takes 2 - 3 days for the smell to disappear, but that's using it throughout the house.
I'd much rather the place smelt like a chip shop for a couple of days than reeking of the (probable) cancer-giving chemicals used in so-called "power sprays". ::)Wins since 2009 = £17,600MANY THANKS TO ALL OPS0 -
Hi
I'm new to this forum and this vinegar thing.
Does anyone know if I can use vinegar to clean my bathroom taps. Not sure if they're brass or whatever but they're the gold ones anyway. Should I use it neat or dilute it and if not does anyone have any good ideas to clean these. Must admit they're a bit tarnished.

sorry,im new to the site and getting confused, what vinegar do i use for fabric conditioner, white or brown?
and for stains on carpets white or brown?is cider vinegar the same as white vinegar,thanks0 -
Hi
Most people advise white vinegar for both jobs since it doesn't smell quite so strongly as the brown stuff - though there's no problem with either really; though again, some posters think there might be a risk of staining with brown so prefer to be on the safe side with white
Cider vinegar is rather different to these two. I'll add a link to this for you:-

As a chemist I know that vinegar (acetic acid) being an acid is very good at removing limescale as limescale is basic so they react and the limescale is removed.
I read on an earlier post that vinegar and bicarb were used togther to remove limescale in a kettle. Bicarb is also a base and reacts with vinegar and produces carbon dioxide gas (that is why it fizzes so you have to add them slowly), I can understand this would help remove blockages in tubes because of the movement but aren't you just neutralising the power of the vinegar, wouldn't it be better to just use vinegar by itself in a kettle. It would still work with bicarb as there will probably be unneutralised vinegar but it seems a waste of bicarb to me.
I admit I haven't tried it, I'm just going on the chemistry of acids and bases, and there could be other factors I'm not considering, but I just thought I'd mention it.
I'm definately going to try vinegar as a softner and a cleaner, I've used it on taps and it works great, but would like to get some essential oil so I can't smell it, what type do people get? Are these harmless?
Also I don't think it's such a good idea to use borax on surfaces, isn't it a bit toxic to consume? There are plenty of natural chemicals that aren't good for us.0
