The trouble is, if you answer the door to capita and sign his bit of paper, they tell lies and fill the rest in later, so you are not in much of a different situation than the dodgers.
Answering a knock at the door is one thing but answering questions or allowing them in is another.

In particular, why on earth would you sign anything?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

without sounding rude i dont think you are correct unless you are blind or over 75 then you need a license to watch tv.

if they took you to court you have no way of proving you dont watch live tv.
You don't need a LICENCE if you don't watch or record TV as it is broadcast.
Check out their website or 'phone them if you don't believe me.
TV Licensing - Check if you need a TV Licence

    EXTRACT
You need to be covered by a valid TV Licence if you watch or record TV as it's being broadcast. This includes the use of devices such as a computer, laptop, mobile phone or DVD/video recorder.

    Quite so.

What I do find worrying, however, is this:

wouldnt the fact you are the registered person at the property vis things such as the electoral roll be a giveaway.

i work at a court and each week we have lots of people who havent paid their license fees so they seem to be able to find out and prosecute.

yep its a grey area but for a £100 odd quid doesnt seem worth the risk of getting caught.

Folks, rang TV Licencing again as I just had a feeling this might be too good to be true, despite the first consultant telling me it was fine. The second consultant said it would only be fine if I can disable the live channels on my TIVO box. Although the TVL website simply says if you do not USE your TV to watch or record live TV, and mentions nothing about needing a licence solely because your device is CAPABLE of receiving live signals, it does say in section 363 of the Communications Act 2003: "A television receiver must not be installed or used unless the installation and use of the receiver is authorised by a licence."
Virgin are unable to disable the live channels for me for some reason so I am just going to get rid of it and use a media hard drive instead, as I resent being forced to pay for something I don't use....bbc tv should be optional (pay if you want it)? Instead we are forced to pay £145 per year to fund channels we didn't ask for, want or need?..What happened to freedom of choice? Why won't they have advertisements to fund themselves like everyone else? Is that our decision? How can they justify charging £145?! Some people may be happy paying this, but it seems wrong that we don't have a choice.
If you own a TV CAPABLE of receiving ANY live channels you must pay, despite the fact that you may not watch bbc channels. Isn't this the equivalent to giving someone a speeding ticket because their car is CAPABLE of exceeding speed limits, even though they never intend to speed? Why don't we stand up for ourselves? MAKE BBC OPTIONAL, ABOLISH TV LICENSE and end this undemocratic regime...Or get a media hard drive!

Load of rubbish... Don't waste your time with those monkeys. If you watch TV you buy a licence. If you don't watch TV as it's broadcast then you don't buy a licence. Simples...

If you want to avoid paying the TV licence then do not speak to anyone. They cannot prosecute you if they do not have evidence...especially the most essential piece of data... Your name.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • So disappointed :( But Multimedia hard drives are still a way out of it, and they are great! Just gotta get one now.
  • Thank you Kurtis_Blue! This is helpful :j
