Much as they signs are making a point often its a waste of time as we simple get people who think its fine to ignore the notice and inconvenience the home owner. You could have a 50 foot sign saying it and you would still get some numpty ignoring sign.

The only message I found that works is given them distinct impression they are wasting there time this usually means dont get into a conversation with them as they want to befriend you before hard sell. A simple no thanks and shut the door. As soon as they utter a few words it gets increasingly more difficult to end conversation quickly

    Debt-free and Proud!
I tell them and the people in supermarkets, that I live at home with my parents. Im 29 and I dont, but it shuts them up pretty quickly, so I emplore anyone of any age at home or out in public, if you answer the door to or come across of of these people, tell them you live with your parents and have no responsabilites for bill! :rotfl:
Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.
  • I've had JWs ask if my parents were in when I answered the door (I was 26)- cue my puzzled face "ermmmm I own this house..." followed by tumbleweed and them backing up the driveway trying to pretend they don't exist.

I had Talk Talk at our last house while we were waiting to be connected to them and the guy at the door tried to convince us to cancel our current order and sign up with him as it would be quicker

My MIL told me about JWs arriving at her house one day approx 20 years ago, she didn't answer the door so they knocked on the window as they saw her. MIL proceded to open the window and let them know that her mother was currently in hospital dying and her husband had recently run off with her best friend leaving her to raise her kid on her own and that God should f'ing well turn up himself right now rather than send his salespeople (all this was true). To be perfectly honest I'm not sure they've ever dare return to that house.

A note as an Avon rep - the no cold caller signs are confusing to me as I have so many customers who have one but order regularly that I tend to ignore them when dropping brochures. I would respect a no brochure sign though however I haven't come across one. I do have a system with people who do not return catalogues- I will knock to ask for it the first time, if they haven't aswered and do not return the second one then I don't return- why waste my/their time or my money. I also put a slip in with EVERY brochure that has a tick box if they do not want to receive it again whether its the first time I've given them one or they've ordered 20 times previously and changed their minds.

There may come a point when that will fail to convince.

    Reminds of the joke -
"In the audience today, we are very pleased to say we have the world's oldest man with us.

He's just sitting at the back row, next to his parents."

I had an extremely awkward experience being on the other side of the door...

I was doing a trial day as a charity fundraiser for UNICEF, and shadowing a more experienced girl (I say that, she'd only been there 3 weeks). We got to a door that had a sign saying "I am a night shift worker and currently asleep. Please do not knock if you are trying to sell me something- that includes charity!". I pointed out the sign to the girl I was with, and said we should move on. She said outright "Nah, doesn't matter, rather have the chance at getting the sign up, just ignore anything that says that".

So when this poor woman came to the door looking shattered and fuming asking why on earth we'd knocked, the girl I was shadowing said "Oh we didn't notice it". I was so embarressed I just wanted the ground to swallow me. This happened again later with an old man. The whole day was a truely horrible experience.

So yeah, UNICEF and other people who are part of Black Code advertising ignore the signs and are very blase when they're pointed out.
