How many slots are there-the second may be underneath the first, but staggered a bit to give access?

thats the one, you should be able to take it out and slot it back in, there should be a satisfying click sound when you put it back fingers crossed that was the issue.

unfortunately it sounds like it did have only one, but it was loose. hopefully by re-inserting it, it might be ok

The 2nd slot is under the 1st accessible after removal of the top RAM module.

I have taken it out and put it back in, now when I switch the laptop on it starts up but stays on a black screen, nothing at all shows up.

might have not secured the ram module, did you slide it in and click it down?

The Toshiba Satellite c660-10T definately IMHO has 2 sockets see here http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.aspx?model=Satellite%20C660-10T&Cat=RAM

max 4gb per socket.
